Jerry Nadler floats civil rights probes of colleges over antisemitism

Rep. New York’s Jerry Nadler has encouraged victims of antisemitism at colleges and universities to consider filing civil rights lawsuits if their institutions fail to respond appropriately.

The Manhattan Democrat, one of the most prominent Jewish members of Congress, insisted on Thursday that while some of what he called “a great surge of antisemitism in our country” constitutes “protected, even vile speech,” Jewish students deserve protection from “threats, outright threats and violence.”

“On campuses, there are often also codes about hate speech and safety culture, and Jewish students must have access to the protections of the school administration in these cases, just as all students do,” Nadler wrote in X.

“And if schools fail to respond appropriately, they may be violating federal civil rights laws. The federal Office of Civil Rights @edcivilrights at @usedgov is the place to send those claims, because it has the authority and responsibility to enforce those laws.”

The massive surge in antisemitism in our country—some of it protected, even vile speech—has also resulted in degradation, threats, intimidation and outright violence, all of which are illegal. Law enforcement must act quickly, accurately and decisively in response, to…

Many of the demonstrations have included antisemitic invective and threats against Jews who appear to be observant.

On Wednesday night, for example, Jewish students were forced to stay inside the library at Cooper Union in New York City, while protesters shouted at them from outside.

Some of the Jewish students heard protesters chanting, “Globalize the intifada from New York to Gaza,” according to New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov.

On Tuesday, protesters projected the words “Glory to Our Martyrs” and “River to the Sea” on the George Washington University building. The last phrase refers to the slogan, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free,” which many interpreted as a call to wipe Israel off the map.

Prominent politicians have demanded a stronger response from university authorities as well as the Biden administration.

Former US ambassador to the United Nations and Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has proposed tax-exempt status for institutions that fail to combat hate crime.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), Haley’s Republican running mate, have urged the US to revoke the visas of foreigners in the US who sympathize with Hamas.
