Jo Koy Had ‘No Ill Intent’ With Viral Golden Globe Taylor Swift Joke

Jo Koy won’t be hearing the last of her inaugural Golden Globes hosting gig anytime soon.

The stand-up comedian, who faced a barrage of criticism from viewers following his joke from the event, has shed light on his swipe at Taylor Swift. She said the message was meant for the NFL and not for Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce.

Jo Koy confirmed the jab was aimed at the NFL, not Taylor Swift

As she took the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Sunday, January 7, Koy was giddy and nervous. In an effort to lighten the mood and build his nerves, he had these words of encouragement about Swift and his girlfriend, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs:

“As you know, we show up after the football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we had fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”

The comment sparked an immediate unimpressed reaction from the singer-songwriter, who sipped his drink. Seeing that the joke failed to land, the 52-year-old quickly added, “Sorry about that,” as Swift appeared to glare at him.

Now, days later, Koy has reflected on the situation, claiming that he finds it confusing. In his words:

“I don’t understand Taylor [Swift] tiff. What hurts the most is that I just support Taylor, I support her, I love her work. I got a niece that I bought a ticket for. There was no malice in the joke.”

He later clarified that the statement was originally aimed at the National Football League and not successful musicians. Explaining further, he told Los Angeles Times:

“It’s like, interesting thing about [Golden] Globes is that we don’t have to cut for ratings.”

Much like Swift, several observers took to social media to post their mixed thoughts on the joke, with one saying, “That landed with a giant bang and a death glare from Swift. Not Jo Koy’s best moment.”

A second social media user quipped, “Poor Taylor Swift, between dating an NFL star, having the biggest concert tour ever, and being the person of the year, I love her so much.”

“Didn’t he run this joke with his people before doing it on stage? If he does, he needs to fire them as soon as possible,” a third admonished, as a fourth pointed out:

“The joke wasn’t funny, and I’m sure that’s what he reacted to, but the way I see Swifties reacting to this is ridiculous. They acted as if he personally insulted her when he didn’t. It’s a well-worn joke about over-saturation. It’s a dig at the NFL, not him.”

The Blast noted that Deidre Hall joined the backlash, quickly taking to Facebook to express her disapproval of Koy’s joke at the 81st Golden Globes Awards. The actor, famous for his role as Dr. Marlena Evans in “Days of Our Lives,” writes:

“Globes Globes host Jo Koy is a disgrace to himself and the Academy. Skip.”

His fans unsurprisingly supported the statement and revealed it in the comments section. “We turned it on for about 5 minutes and tried to observe the man. I don’t know who he is even my husband said he’s not funny and the audience wasn’t laughing either and we changed the channel,” typed one Facebook user.

A moment to wonder, “Did you see he was so nervous he didn’t have saliva in his mouth AND he kept saying I wrote some of the jokes and the writers wrote the others? The whole show sucks. I don’t know half of the ‘stars’ and I don’t watch any movie.”

“Agreed, very unprofessional and very embarrassing,” a third chimed in, while a fourth echoed, “He’s very unfit for the job. I agree 100%.”

In case you missed it, Koy kicked off the 2024 ceremony with an opening monologue that delved into Ozempic Hollywood trends and interrelated jokes about films nominated for awards.

He jokingly suggested that “Oppenheimer” needed “an hour more” and characterized “Barbie” as a movie about “a plastic doll with a big b——”.
