Joe and Jill Biden host ‘Hallo-READ’ trick or treating despite rainy conditions

WASHINGTON — Gray skies and a light drizzle added a spooky element and as many books as candy to the Halloween night of trick-or-treating hosted by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden at the White House.

Monday’s “Hello-READ” event featured book giveaways and story readings by the first lady, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and authors.

The first lady showed her spirit by wearing cat ears, a tail and a black nose. She said she was dressed as her cat, Willow.

“Go have fun and eat lots of candy,” he said to a group of costumed children after he read “Sepuluh Labu Seram,” a counting book.

Jean-Pierre wears a halo and angel wings, saying he chose that over a devil costume.

After he finished reading, the president and first lady spent about 90 minutes greeting children from local public schools and from military families, who were invited.

As costumed children walked along the driveway, Biden placed M&Ms or Hershey’s Kisses in small boxes stamped with the president’s seal into their bags or buckets. The first woman held out a book.

About 8,000 guests are expected, the White House said.

Many departments and agencies of the federal government participated, many with booths dotting the southern area filled with all kinds of chocolate candies and other sweet treats provided by the National Confectionery Association and its member companies.

Scholastic donated the books.
