John Boyega Makes Peace With The Way ‘Star Wars’ Treated Finn

Actor John Boyega is making peace with how Disney “Star Wars” treated his character Finn years after the sequel trilogy ended.

Although the 31-year-old had a major role in 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” he saw smaller and smaller roles in 2017’s “The Last Jedi” and 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which completed the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.

In a recent interview with The Times (via CBR ), John Boyega reflected on what it’s like to play a First Order Stormtrooper turned Resistance hero.

“For me, Star Wars made the man, in a sense,” Boyega said. “The experiences, the fun times, the good times, the ugly times, the bad times, it makes you who you are as you navigate the industry, and that’s definitely exciting.”

“I feel like the arc that JJ is trying to tie, that’s where I feel comfortable with his release,” Boyega continued. JJ Abrams directed the first film, “The Force Awakens” and took over from Colin Trevorrow to create the last film, “The Rise of Skywalker.” Rian Johnson, who is now famous for the “Knives Out” franchise, created “The Last Jedi” in 2017.

No Star Wars movies have been released in theaters since 2019. Instead, Disney has focused on several Disney+ shows, which include “The Mandalorian,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Andor,” and several others that still in development.

“Since then, I’ve been able to enjoy, as a fan, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Boyega said. “I enjoy the balance of all things.

In 2020, less than a year after “The Rise of Skywalker” hit the theaters, John Boyega made Disney excited about how they treated him and his character, claiming that they “knew what to do” with Daisy Ridley, who played Rey, and Adam Driver, who played the villain Kylo Ren and a redeemed Ben Solo in an interview with GQ magazine.

“Don’t cast black characters, market them to be more important to the franchise than they are, and then push them to the side. It’s not good,” Boyega said at the time. “Like, you guys know what to do with Daisy Ridley, you know what to do with Adam Driver. You know what to do with these other people, but when it comes to Kelly Marie Tran, when it comes to John Boyega, you know everything.”

“So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Well, well, well. I will accept the deal when it is a great experience,” he continued. “They gave all the nuances to Adam Driver, all the nuances to Daisy Ridley. Be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knew this. Everybody knows. I did not reveal anything.”

Since then, however, Boyega told the BBC (via CBR ) that he got on the phone with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy to discuss his concerns about how the franchise treats characters of color.

“So I got on the phone with Kathleen Kennedy [Lucasfilm President] and he verbally showed support and we got to have a really good, transparent, honest conversation that was beneficial to both of us,” Boyega told the BBC later that year. “I think conversations like this, you can go into the realm of sounding like you’re just trying to save your own career, but what’s great now is that it’s a conversation that anyone can access.”

“Now people can express themselves about this knowing that any character that we love, especially in big franchises like Marvels and Star Wars, we love them for the moments they’re given, we love them for the moments- those moments, and they’re heroic moments that these producers decided for these characters so we have to see that in our characters who may be black and from other cultures,” he continued.

In an August 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Boyega said that he was still a fan of the franchise. “People are always surprised! The industry issue has nothing to do with Star Wars and I’m a fan of it. I’ve watched Obi-Wan, I’ve watched The Mandalorian,” he said.

“I will forever be a fan of this franchise. As far as Finn? I’m good at that,” he added, saying that he would support his costars if they chose to return to the galaxy far, far away. As far as he was concerned, he had no plans to play Finn again.

“At this point, I’m just calm. I’m satisfied,” Boyega said in an August 2022 interview with SiriusXM’s Tell Me Everything With John Fugelsang when asked if he would play the character again. “I think Finn is at a good validation point where you can enjoy him in other things, games, animation. But I feel like'[Episode] VII’ to ‘[Episode] IX’ is good for me.”
