John McEnroe Talks Narrating ‘Never Have I Ever’

When tennis legend John McEnroe retired in 2006, he probably never imagined that he would be the voice narrating the life experiences of teenager Devi Vishwakumar in the upcoming Netflix series, “Never Have I Ever.”

However, that unlikely career choice can be credited to Mindy Kaling and her uncanny brilliance in turning a 63-year-old man into a kind of inner voice for an overachieving but troubled 16-year-old high school student.

In a recent interview, McEnroe opened up about how he and Kaling embarked on such a journey despite never knowing each other before.

While talking to ET Online, the 17-time Grand Slam winner talked about her role in the comedy-drama series, saying, “Who would have thought that [I] would be a psychologist or an uncle or a counselor to an 18- or 17-year-old American Indian girl going through high school, so I have to appreciate Mindy Kaling.”

Explaining how Kaling came up with such a unique idea, McEnroe revealed that “The Office” alum drew inspiration from her own life. “It turns out his father was a huge tennis fan and must have talked about me a lot when he was growing up,” the 63-year-old said. “He was in India and that was his story.”
