John Mulaney’s New Netflix Special Tackles The Comedian’s Tumultuous Personal Struggles

Comedian John Mulaney incorporated his struggles into his Netflix comedy special, “Baby J.”

The former “Saturday Night Live” writer has incorporated many elements of his life into his stand-up comedy, but his latest, out today, will explore vulnerable new territory.

Mulaney, 40, shocked fans when he entered rehab in 2020 and spent 60 days in a facility. His personal life has also made headlines in recent years following his divorce from artist Anna Marie Tendler, news of his relationship with actress Olivia Wilde, and the birth of his first child.

Mulaney spoke candidly about the events that led to his rehab stay nearly three years ago and his past struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse. “Baby J” will be the first time Mulaney’s recent personal struggles will be documented on one of his comedy shows. He returned to performing after undergoing rehabilitation in 2021.

The “Gorgeous Kid” performer spoke about the star-studded intervention of her friends that led to her rehab stay.

During an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” Mulaney explained the timeline of his whirlwind year between 2020 and 2021. He discussed the intervention with his ‘SNL’ peers (Meyers was in attendance) and candidly shared his thoughts and feelings about the conversation.

“When I opened the door, I knew immediately there was an intervention,” he explained to Meyers. “That’s how bad my drug problem was. When I open the door and see people, I say, ‘This might be an intervention.

“You were the first person I saw when I walked through the door,” he later told Meyers. “Where I knew this was meddling. So I was like, ‘going to dinner with a friend from college, going to dinner with a friend from college, going to dinner with a friend from college, what is Seth Meyers doing here?!” he continued.

“My memory of it,” Meyers said, “is how quickly you tried to tell us all ‘this is an intervention, we’re good, I understand, I agree…”

“I remember walking in and saying, ‘Okay, Okay.’ And then I did… I had to be the smartest person in the room even during the intervention,” continued Mulaney. “So, I remember saying to all of you, ‘Before you all read your letter, I have a drug problem , and I need help, just to scoop you up,” he told Meyers with a laugh.

Mulaney later told Meyers that he thought Meyers was being “kind” when he remembered how he behaved that night, particularly in front of the professional interventionist present.

“I remember several times saying, ‘I KNOW what interference is.’ The worst thing is, and I regret this, that I… two things I kept doing… I kept insisting I was conscious during the intervention” (he wasn’t). “Another thing, I insisted on getting credit for the few days I didn’t use drugs. Yeah, that’s a unique hill to die in the middle of an intervention,” Mulaney said. “[Being] like ‘I want you guys to admit that Mondays and Tuesdays I don’t do drugs!’

“John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch” then asks his friend for his perspective.

Meyers described the intervention as “horrific” after Mulaney joked about getting a reprieve from awkwardness because he was high at the time.

“Mostly because you do that because you’re worried about your friends, so it starts from there. Also, again, I don’t want to take the focus away from the drug part, but you’re too late,” Meyers joked.
