Johns Hopkins’ diversity chief labels whites, males and Christians as ‘privileged’

A head of diversity at Johns Hopkins Medicine sent a “monthly diversity summary” email to staff with a letter declaring all white, Christian and male people to be “predominant”.

Dr. Sherita Hill Golden, chief diversity officer for the hospital system, also included “heterosexuals” and English speakers in the “privileged” category in her letter to all staff.

Under a section titled “Diversity is the word of the Month,” Golden defines privilege as “a set of unearned benefits granted to people belonging to a particular social group” that operate at the “personal, interpersonal, cultural, and institutional levels.”

He provided a list of privileged social groups, including: white people, able-bodied people, heterosexuals, cisgender people, men, Christians, middle-class people or owners, middle-aged people and English-speaking people.

“Privilege cannot be seen by the person who has it. People in dominant groups often believe that they have earned the privileges they enjoy or that everyone can gain access to these privileges if only they work for them,” he added in the letter.

A “monthly diversity summary” letter was given to and posted on X’s account “End Consciousness.”

The diversity announcement was sparked on social media by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who tweeted “This must end!”

Musk, the richest man on the planet, is also white, cisgender, English-speaking.

Former president Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., also condemned the decision, posting “The rot and racism in higher education goes beyond Harvard, MIT, and Penn (my alma mater) it has taken over almost every institution and needs to end now.”

Golden retracted his definition of privilege and issued an apology to staff this morning after the backlash.

“The newsletter included a definition of the word privilege which, on reflection, I deeply regret,” he wrote in the memo, obtained by The Daily Mail. “The intent of the newsletter is to inform and support the inclusive community at Hopkins, but the language of this definition clearly does not meet that goal.

“In fact, because it’s too simplistic and poorly worded, it has the opposite effect,” he continued. “I retract and reject the definition I shared and I apologize.”
