Jon Favreau Explains Why Lizzo and Jack Black Appeared In ‘The Mandalorian’

“The Mandalorian” showrunner Jon Favreau is finally ready to explain why Lizzo and Jack Black are appearing in Disney+’s live-action “Star Wars” series.

Although their cameo split many fans, Favreau revealed that there was a specific reason he decided to include the two pop culture icons in a galaxy far, far away.

In the sixth episode of the third season of “The Mandalorian,” fans were surprised to see Lizzo and Jack Black star as the rulers of a new planet called Plazir-15. Lizzo plays Dutchess, while Black plays Captain Bombardier, a former Imperial officer who falls in love with Dutchess after visiting the planet.

Just days after the episode aired, fans flocked to London for the annual Star Wars Celebration fan event, which ran from April 7 to April 10 this year. At the event, Entertainment Weekly asked Jon Favreau exactly why he decided to include Lizzo and Jack Black in the series.

Favreau explained that both Lizzo and Black are fans of the show. Lizzo famously dressed as Grogu for Halloween two years ago and Black has posted about “The Mandalorian” on social media.

“We got Lizzo and Jack Black involved because, honestly, one of the things we really like about working on the show is we like to bring in people who are fans themselves,” Favreau explained, adding that their social media presence caught his eye.

“Lizzo and Jack Black are both very active on social media,” he continued. “I’ve known Jack for a long time, but he posts and does Mandalorian stuff whether it’s on Instagram or TikTok. And Lizzo dressed like Grogu. And my kids have been showing me all these videos of how Lizzo does it.

Although Favreau knew he had to include both pop culture icons in the show, he explained that he had to figure out which roles would be right for them. “When we thought about it, we had an episode that would have this really eccentric royal couple at court that felt like something out of Alice in Wonderland,” he said. “And we reached out and they were like, ‘We love it!’”

In the show, Dutchess is really taken with Grogu and the feeling seems to be mutual. After Grogu helps her cheat in a game of space bocce, the Dutchess plays him, not with a lightsaber, but with an actual metal sword.

Lizzo, who has been a big fan of Grou for years, is also excited to meet the animatronic puppet in real life. “There’s something really fun about being on set with people who are excited to meet Grogu,” Favreau explained. “It’s a puppet, but it’s animatronic and you’ll have, like, five people on a side, but it’s radio-controlled and, when people hold the little puppet, it’s like they’re dealing with a real character.”

“So it was really fun and exciting on set. There’s a lot of pretty heavy and serious stuff going on this season, so this planet we’re on gives us permission to have fun with it,” he added. “It was a blast on set.”

Katee Sackhoff Loves Watching Lizzo Interact With Grogu

Although their cameo appearance divided fans, there was one actor who was happier to see them there. Katee Sackhoff, who plays Bo-Katan Kryze, couldn’t stop smiling when she saw Lizzo and Black interact with the animated puppets.

“Thankfully, we got to the point where Bo was entertained by them,” joked Sackhoff. “He had a smile on his face the whole time because sitting there with a straight face was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. And thankfully, I can lean on that entertainment, and so can Bo.”

“Watching him on set with Grogu was one of the funniest things, because I felt like I was seeing myself back for the first time, because he was so excited,” Sackhoff recalls. “The first time she saw him, I swear she had tears in her eyes she was so excited to meet Grogu.”

Even executive producer Rick Famuyiwa agreed that the two royals “bring out different sides of Bo,” adding, “Lizzo has that magical effect. Even the first time we met her, we did Zoom and her entire window was filled with Grogus where— wherever. He’s really excited to be a part of this.”

“The thing that brings us all together is just our excitement about Star Wars, and I think both Lizzo and Jack Black have been fans of the show and Star Wars fans forever,” he added. “So it’s great that there are so many people who love Star Wars and love the show.”
