Prisons Understaffed & Gangs Abound
“There’s not much security around because they’re severely understaffed,” a source with direct knowledge of the situation revealed. “Prison has quite heavy politics, which means there are gangs in it. Fortunately, it is not as violent as a simple security facility.”
They went on to say, “But it’s just a dangerous situation, given the level of neglect and so I know that my family members have felt concern for him, I guess I would say he’s always concerned about his well-being, even though he feels physically safe.”
An inmate is suing the prison over allegations he was beaten by another inmate.
Per US Sunan inmate filed a complaint against a federal prison in October 2022. The inmate claimed staff released him back into the general population knowing he was “in fear of his life.”
“I was attacked with a key by an inmate who was paid by another inmate to carry out the attack,” he said of the July 27, 2022 incident.
In terms of medical neglect, the inmate’s family members said the prison doesn’t always hold “sick calls” on scheduled days.
“My family members did not receive any medical treatment for two and a half years because of their disability. He asked and they kept telling him that he was on the list,” they revealed. “He needs glasses, and he’s been on the list to get an optometry appointment for over a year and still hasn’t gotten anything. A family member of mine has had a situation where he had a cold or COVID. And sometimes it’s days before he can get any attention at all.”

The prisoners live in rather bad conditions.
“They had no electricity or heat for days, even though the big cold came through Texas. They don’t have any hot water for days at a time,” the outlet reported. “They’ve gone through six generators in the last six weeks because they keep burning them instead of just fixing the electricity.”
The prisoners’ food was often “disgustingly stale” and they were undernourished.
“They have a lot of grain that has bugs in it, and so people can’t eat their grain because it’s full of bugs,” the source said.
