A self-described journalist has been branded a “crazy lunatic” for insinuating that a hostage freed from Hamas at the weekend expressed his “appreciation and gratitude” to the terrorists as he was handed over to the Red Cross.
Maree Campbell, whose bio on X describes her as “International Relations Analyst” and journalist, shared a screenshot of Mia Regev, 21, claiming that her facial expression seemed to express her gratitude for the kind treatment.
“I’m not an expert on facial expressions, but based on the look in his eyes and the expression on his face, I would say it’s a look of appreciation and thanks,” Campbell said aired on sundays.
“Perhaps he was giving thanks for being treated unexpectedly well while in custody.”
The post was widely condemned online, and a community note was added – saying that Regev had been shot and that his brother was believed to be either dead or still in captivity.
“Mia Regev was shot by Palestinian terrorists before they kidnapped her and her brother,” he said.
“They held him with a bullet wound for 50 days as a hostage and only released him according to an agreement to release convicted criminals from prison. He needs immediate medical attention after his release.”

Pundit Jonah Goldberg, former National Review, also answered: “WTF is wrong with you?”
Others called his name, including former MSNBC security analyst Malcolm Nance, who said he was an “absolute moron,” and author Bethany Mandel, who called Campbell a “mad man.”
“You are really stupid if you think that a hostage who may have been abused for 47 days says with his eyes, ‘Thank you for the kindness of kidnapping me, shooting me, tying me to a chair, beating and [possibly] sexually assault me! Oh, and thank you for killing my family and neighbors,’” Nance wrote.
“Any smile here means, ‘F– you’re a terrorist. I will see you burn in Hell.”
Israel’s ransom agreement: What is it?
Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement to release 50 hostages held by the terrorist organization in exchange for a 4-day pause in hostilities and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire can be extended by an additional day for every 10 hostages released by Hamas.
Three Americans could be released in the deal.
The Red Cross will visit the hostages who have not yet been released.
Hamas said Israel would release 150 Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal.
Hamas took 240 people hostage and killed more than 1,200 in its terrorist attacks on October 7.
Author Carol Roth also commented“If you are held hostage, you are not, by definition, treated well.”
David Marcus, a columnist for Fox News, meanwhile, suggested“Maybe he can leave a good Yelp review.
“In fact, they could probably use a few more hostages, you should volunteer Maree. Experience the hospitality of Hamas for yourself.”
The post was widely condemned online, and a community note was added – saying that Regev had been shot and that his brother was believed to be either dead or still in captivity. He also shared a video of Regev’s release overlaid with the words, “You set me free but you captured my heart” and suggested Elon Musk visit Gaza when he visits Israel.
But Campbell only doubled down on his claims, saying the community notes added to his post should be “reviewed … because the ‘context’ added is from an unreliable source and completely irrelevant to the content of my post.
“Together, let’s defeat the Zionists who try to game the system and harass us in silence,” he wrote.

“It will add content similar to community notes,” Campbell wrote.
