Julia Roberts Breaks Her Silence On Matthew Perry’s Death

Julia Roberts commented on the death of her ex-boyfriend Matthew Perry, and kept his memory alive at the same time.

According to reports, the actress paid homage to the late actor with a subtle reference in her latest Hollywood project. While she didn’t say how this reference would play out, Roberts expressed her sadness over the beloved “Friends” star’s passing and also talked about the life lessons she learned from the show recently.

Julia Roberts Is Sad About Matthew Perry’s Death

Roberts got a chance to reflect on her short-lived relationship with Perry, who was found unresponsive in her hot tub on Oct. 28, during a recent interview. Kicking off the conversation, the “Mystic Pizza” actor talked about his brief stint on “Friends” as the late actor’s childhood classmate Chandler Bing.

After admitting that he had only “all good thoughts and feelings” about his appearance on the long-running NBC sitcom, he noted of the show’s stars, “They’ve all been very welcoming of me as just kind of a one-off character, and it’s time which was a lot of fun.”

She later touched on her ex-boyfriend’s death, stating, “The sudden passing of someone so young is heartbreaking. I think that, you know, it just helps us all appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can.”

In addition to learning this lesson from Perry’s death, Roberts will also honor her memory in her new film, “Leave the World Behind,” by subtly incorporating “Friends” into it. As shared by Mahershala Ali, who also stars in the apocalyptic thriller ET:

“It’s beautiful that he can be respected in that way. Or such a performance is honored, incidentally, at this time. So it’s kind of nice that it has a little bit of space in there.”

It’s worth noting that before her death, Perry had revealed a “three-month courtship” with Roberts, coinciding with her appearance on the “Friends” episode “The One After the Super Bowl” in 1996.

According to her memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” their relationship began when the 56-year-old was considering her guest role on “Friends.” He recounts in the book:

“I sent her three dozen red roses, and the card read, ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers.'”

He detailed how exciting it was to exchange letters with Academy Award winners that he “would find myself on several occasions sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cutting the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived. “

The “Ally McBeal” star indicated that by the time the episode she appeared in was being filmed, they were already romantically involved. On the decline if their romance, he wrote:

“Two months later, I’m still single. Dating Julia Roberts was too much for me. I was always sure that he would break up with me. Why doesn’t he want to? I am not enough; I can never have enough; I am broken, twisted, unlovable.”

Apparently, Perry’s decision to end the relationship with Roberts was driven by the pressure of dating a Hollywood A-lister.

“Instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I parted ways with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She probably thought she was having an affair with a TV guy, and that TV guy is now breaking up with her. I can’t describe the confusion on his face,” he said.

In addition to the “Pretty Woman” star, Perry also fell in love with her co-star, Jennifer Aniston, who played the role of Rachel Green in the multi-award winning series.

She revealed her admiration for the Golden Globe winner in her memoir, claiming that she was attracted to him when they first met, but that her feelings were not reciprocated.

Mutual friends had connected the two superstars three years before their “Friends” collaboration, with Perry revealing that, at the time, she had called the Los Angeles native to share the news of landing two acting jobs in one day.

“’You are the first person I want to tell this to.’ Bad idea. I could feel the ice forming over the phone,” the “Almost Hero” actor relayed.

However, the blast of cold air didn’t stop Perry, as he finally asked her out. Of that, she reflected, “He declined (which made it very difficult to actually go out with him) but said that he wanted to be friends with me.”
