Jussie Smollett Spotted Reading Matthew Perry’s Memoir After Entering Rehab

The disgraced “Empire” star Jussie Smollett was recently seen reading the memoir of actor Matthew Perry who died two months ago.

Perry’s memoir details his long battle with substance abuse among several other struggles he faced during his lifetime.

Smollett’s latest appearance with the memoir has sparked outrage as he is currently in rehab for substance abuse treatment.

In Smollett’s latest photo, he is seen strolling solo reading Perry’s memoir titled, “ Friends, Lovers, and Big Awful Things.”

The actor, who died in October 2023 from “acute effects of ketamine,” as confirmed by Explosion, released a memoir last year to share her vulnerable side. In the book, he goes into depth about his struggles with alcohol and substance abuse and how it affected his health.

For the solo trip, Smollett wore a gray shirt under a black jacket with a hoodie, along with black pants to match. The actress has a laptop by her side and can be seen occasionally using her smartphone as she flips through the pages of Perry’s memoir.

Smollett himself has had a tough few years due to a hate crime scam involving him that saw him sentenced to prison and probation in March 2022. Now, the actor is trying to get his life back together as he reportedly checked himself into rehab.

A photo of Smollett reading Perry’s memoir emerged during a recent rehab. The actor is currently in a rehab facility, which he entered in October, as an outpatient for substance abuse.

A statement from Smollett’s rep read at the time, “Jussie has had a very difficult few years. He has quietly been working hard for a long time and we are proud of him for taking these necessary steps.”

During his 2022 hate crime fraud trial, allegations of Smollett’s substance abuse surfaced several times, with the Osundairo brothers claiming that they helped the actor obtain some illegal substances.

In addition to spending the first 150 days of his sentence in jail, the actor was placed on 30 months of felony probation and mandated to pay a $25,000 fine and $120,106 in restitution. But, after spending less than a week in jail, Smollett was released pending an appeal.

While the reason behind Smollett’s interest in Perry’s memoir is unclear, it is likely due to their shared history of substance abuse.

As reported by Explosion, Perry once wrote in his memoir about how his weight dropped to 128 pounds due to his addiction. The actor also shared that he popped 55 Vicodin tablets a day at the height of his addiction, along with copious amounts of booze.

His substance abuse eventually resulted in a gastrointestinal perforation, which landed him in the ICU with a survival rate of just 2%. The actor ended up spending up to five months in hospital at the time, with the first two weeks being in a coma. Perry also had to go through the discomfort of using a colostomy bag for nine months.

Perry’s admissions about her substance abuse resurfaced recently following her unfortunate passing. The actor’s memoirs show a glimpse of what may have led to his death.

The official autopsy report obtained by Explosion indicated that the actor’s cause of death was an overdose of Ketamine along with other factors.

Perry had the same amount of Ketamine in his system as a hospital patient under general anaesthetic, which led to his death arising from “acute effects of Ketamine” and drowning.

“The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department determined the cause of death of 54-year-old actor Matthew Langford Perry to be the acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles coroner’s office recently revealed.

It continued, “Contributing factors to Mr. Perry’s death included drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder). The manner of death is an accident.”

Perry is reportedly undergoing treatment for her anxiety and depression through Ketamine infusion therapy. This treatment was about a week and a half before she was found face down in her hot tub as described in the autopsy report.

The “Friends” star was laid to rest, with all five of her co-stars attending her funeral.
