Actor Justin Long and actress Kate Bosworth made their first public appearance together after announcing their engagement earlier this month.
After announcing their engagement on Long’s podcast, the two made an appearance during Rothy’s Earth Day event in New York City on Wednesday. The event was held at the Nolita store for the sustainable shoe brand and supports efforts to keep plastic bottles out of landfills.
The event, created in partnership with the non-profit organization Sure We Can and NYPIRG, was attended by the two Hollywood stars, who spoke to PEOPLE magazine about their new involvement and the importance of caring for the environment.

When asked when Kate learned that Justin cared about the environment, she revealed that it happened early in their relationship when he visited her hometown in Fairfield, Connecticut, and he picked her up in an “old Prius” that was “kind of beat up. .” Justin added that it has some Bernie Sanders bumper stickers on the back.
“It’s like, it’s a well-loved and well-used eco-friendly vehicle,” Kate said, before Justin added, “We learned early on how much we love animals and I love sea turtles in particular.”

He later spoke more about the event, saying, “I was brought into this particular project through my love for that particular animal and how plastic waste affects that beautiful species that has existed for 150 million years. So when we found out what done by Rothy and how they are fighting for sustainability in that arena, we are very inspired.”
The “Blue Crush” actress added that she’s worn Rothy’s shoes for years, prompting the “Accepted” actress to joke, “People eavesdropping would probably think she works for the company.

When asked if they each “feel different” about going out in public since announcing their engagement, Justin replied, “It’s been great that people have been so supportive.”
“I mean, strangers in the world… We went to the grocery store the other day and I put my cart back and the lady working there said, ‘I’ll take it and oh and congratulations,’” he recalled. “And I thought, at first I thought he was talking about, I don’t know, something I bought, my upcoming MTV movie or something. I was like, ‘Thank you.’”

“But I think it’s been a long time since I felt as close as possible to someone,” he continued. “I feel that way about Kate and so I don’t feel any different. I feel like I’ve been so connected to him for so long that it’s all been so positive.”
Kate said that the experience was “exhilarating,” adding, “I mean, like I said in my Instagram post, how do you announce this? It’s funny because usually I think people would announce it to their friends and family, but there was a the point where, when you’re in the public arena, it’s time to share something with the world.”

In an Instagram post on April 4, Kate shared an Instagram carousel of the two together, writing, “This is a funny thing to announce. How to do this correctly? Will he go far? I have a Blue Crush? He’s just THAT to me? I have won a date with…??? Ok you got it!”
After directing fans to listen to Justin’s “Life Is Short” podcast, Kate added, “If life is short, find someone who brings you endless peace and radical wonder.” She then called out her “future husband,” adding, “I’m so thankful for you.”

While at the Earth Day event, Justin told the magazine, “We enjoy our privacy and it’s such a personal thing that we decided to talk about it on our podcast.” Kate added, “I think the easiest way is to say how excited we are to start this next chapter.”
“But to answer your question as well, it doesn’t feel that different,” Justin continued. “I’ve always felt so close to him and loved being with him regardless of our label and status but it’s really nice to see the response from people now, it’s really moving.”
