Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday was angered by Republican accusations that Democrats support abortion until birth, but declined to say where the line should be drawn.
“It’s ridiculous,” Harris said in a wide-ranging “Face the Nation” interview in response to the GOP’s demands. “It’s a mischaracterization.”
“I was precise. We need to put in place the Roe v. protection laws. Wade. And that’s about getting back to where we were before the Dobbs decision.”
Moderator Margaret Brennan repeatedly probed Harris about the meaning of such actions in terms of limits on procedures to terminate pregnancies.
Brennan noted the precedent first set in Roe. V. Wade allowed restrictions to pass “anywhere between 20 to 24 weeks.”
“No, no, no, no, no,” Harris replied. “We need to put the protections found in Roe v. Wade back into law.”
Harris underlined “we’re not trying to do anything new” – and that “the vast majority” of Americans are on his side.

Republicans have hammered Democrats for being evasive about where they will draw the line on abortion as they grapple with bleak public support for higher restrictions.
Last month, for example, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) was upset after an NBC reporter denied his claim that Democrats want abortion legal “until birth in some circumstances.”
An estimated 1.3% of abortions nationally occur after 21 weeks of pregnancy, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fetal viability is generally considered to occur around six months after pregnancy. The record for the earliest premature baby born to live is approximately 21 weeks.
The DeSantis campaign released a compilation of prominent Democrats such as Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) who declined to specify a cutoff point.
There is also legislation that Democrats fought for after the overturning of Roe v. Wade that appears to have overturned the abortion limit.
For example, Maine Governor Janet Mills this summer signed a bill allowing the procedure at any point in pregnancy if doctors deem it medically necessary.
Many Democrats have countered Republicans with arguments that in some cases, late-term abortions are medically necessary and therefore deserve some form.
To ensure women’s right to abortion nationally, Harris stressed both she and President Biden depend on voters — citing the 60-vote threshold in the Senate to overcome the filibuster and House GOP control.
Harris is confident that he and Biden will win in 2024.
“We will win, we will win re-election. There’s too much at stake and the American people know it,” Harris declared, dismissing questions about whether they were underestimating former President Donald Trump.
On the campaign trail, some contenders such as Republican nominee Nikki Haley have warned a vote for Biden, 80, would mean Harris, 58, would take over.
“There’s nothing new about that,” Harris said of the attack.
“Yes I am, if necessary,” he replied when pressed if he was ready to take over. “But Joe Biden will be fine.”

Biden is already the longest-serving president in US history and will be 86 at the end of his hypothetical second term in office.
Trump and Biden are engaged in a flurry of national polls — which overestimate Republican support in the 2022 midterm elections.
Biden has a very slim 0.4 percentage point lead over Trump in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.
