On January 13, 2024, hundreds of fans gathered at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to watch the Chiefs dominate the Dolphins in a 26-7 playoff victory. However, it now turns out that it is a literal sacrifice for many fans to watch a winning game.

Due to the frostbite experienced by many of the participants, the medical director at the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center in Kansas City has advised amputation. Doctors reportedly recommend amputation for about 70% of patients who come to the Grossman Burn Center with frostbite, while another 30% will spend several weeks in a hyperbaric oxygen tank.

According to TMZ, one of the victims included a die-hard Chiefs fan who took off his gloves for just 5 minutes to set up a tent in the parking lot. Remember that the Chiefs faced the Dolphins in a chilling temperature of -4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius), and wind gusts up to 27 mph produced a wind chill of -27 degrees.

It was so intense that Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ helmet shattered into pieces when he was hit, and coach Andy Reid had a frozen mustache. The January 13 game set a record for the coldest game played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1983.
