A study by the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology reveals the discovery of a new fungicidal bacterium. A report published in February explained that bacteria from the genus Pseudomonas produce powerful antimicrobial products that can kill plant- and human-pathogenic fungi.
The compound, named “keanumycins,” got its name from the Hollywood veteran for its lethal abilities. In a published report, Sebastian Götze, a researcher with Germany’s Leibniz Institute, shared more about the naming process.
“The lipopeptide kills so efficiently that we named it after Keanu Reeves because he is also very deadly in his role,” the scientist said before revealing that keanumycins are an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.
News of the groundbreaking discovery didn’t reach “The Matrix” star until March 4, when the performer took part in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit. During the Q&A thread, a fan asked the Canadian actor about his thoughts on the deadly fungicide.
“They should call him John Wick,” the entertainer joked before admitting the name, keanumycins, touched it. “But that was really good…and real for me. But thanks, scientist! Good luck, and thanks for helping us.”

When a fan wondered if the 58-year-old had ever stolen items from a movie set, the “Constantine” star revealed all of his memorabilia had been given away.
