Kentucky co-workers win $50K after boss gifts them scratch-offs for Christmas

A group of coworkers in Kentucky scored big this holiday when they won $50,000 for a lottery scratch that was a Christmas gift from their supervisor.

Sheila Colter, a shift supervisor at Med Center Health Environmental Services in Bowling Green, bought Kentucky Lottery tickets as gifts for her employees at their annual holiday party.

He said he had ordered other items to give to the staff but they didn’t arrive on time, so he got scratched instead – a change of plan that ended up paying off big time.

“Our work Christmas party is early this year. I ordered some stuff online, but it didn’t come before the party,” Colter said. “So, I decided to get Scratch-off instead.”

The $30 ticket he bought to share with the team won him $50 so he used the cash to buy a $50 Millionaire Club Scratch-Off.

They then doubled their money, winning $100 from the ticket. But Colter didn’t stop there.

“We continue to play as a group. There were 21 of us,” Colter said. “I would stop on the way to work, and we kept winning.”

He bought two more tickets for $100 and one of them ended up winning the team the game’s second-place prize of $50,000, according to the Kentucky Lottery.

“We are all very excited. I was on the floor,” Colter said of their big win.

Colter and an employee Winnie Beckman went to lottery headquarters to pick up their prizes. After taxes, they walked away with a check for $35,750, the Kentucky Lottery said in a press release Tuesday.

Each employee will take home about $1,750 of the winnings, split 21 ways.

Colter said he plans to use his share to cover his holiday shopping.

Meanwhile, Beckman is putting money into taking care of his mother, who was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

“I’ll use it for my mother’s medicine,” he said. “This will help a lot. And I will never forget this.”

The store where Colter bought the winning ticket, IGA Express on US 31 West Bypass in Bowling Green, will also receive $500 from the Kentucky Lottery.

“Very meaningful. This will help a lot of people,” Colter said.
