House Speaker Kevin McCarthy predicts that first son Hunter Biden will eventually be subpoenaed — when the time is right.
“One thing the American public needs to understand is that there is a strategy behind everything,” McCarthy told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“We only follow the facts. Hunter Biden to be subpoenaed, but when is the right time? Do you do it because television wants it, or do you do it based on facts and timing?”
Last Tuesday, McCarthy announced he was directing three congressional committees to begin an impeachment inquiry into President Biden over foreign dealings that benefited his family.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer explained last week that his panel had not yet gone after Hunter via subpoena because of the legal complexities of going after the first family.
“He can fight the subpoena in court. It is very difficult. I think if it’s easy to get the president or their son in front of a House committee, the Jan. 6 committee will probably do it with Donald Trump,” Comer (R-Ky.) told Newsmax last week.
Most notably, the now-defunct Jan. 6 Committee subpoenaed Trump to testify just before the 2022 midterm elections. It also subpoenaed several people close to the Trump family such as Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancee.
“I think we should have bank statements to really know where the money went, so you’ll know what questions to ask Hunter Biden,” McCarthy said. “To call out Hunter Biden just because you want to raise funds, or you want to do something, that’s not the way we’re going to conduct an investigation.”
The Comer panel has already issued a barrage of subpoenas and sought voluntary cooperation from key witnesses. It has already heard from a few people like Hunter’s longtime business partner, Devon Archer.

Archer testified that President Biden sometimes took part in some of Hunter’s business calls to simply engage in quick business, but emphasized that he would not miss the future president discussing business.
The president and the White House have vigorously insisted that he is not involved in his son’s business affairs.
The announcement of the McCarthy impeachment inquiry comes in the shadow of a dispute between the parties over how to fund the government.
As required every new fiscal year, which begins in early October, Congress has to fund the government in some way or face a shutdown.
In late May, Republicans agreed to the Fiscal Responsibility Act to increase the nation’s borrowing power as part of the debt ceiling kerfuffle.

The debt ceiling only relates to how much the government can borrow and not fund the government.
As part of the debt limit agreement, they also agreed on a top allocation number before the government funding process.
But, as McCarthy acknowledged, progress in advancing the 12 appropriations bills needed to fund the government has been slow. That’s why he’s looking for an ongoing temporary solution to avoid a shutdown.
Hardliners in his caucus have demanded further cuts below the agreed figure as well as other concessions such as strengthened border security in exchange for CR.
“I understand the frustration we have with this administration. But it’s a difference in strategy,” McCarthy warned. “I’ve been through a shutdown and I’ve never seen someone win a shutdown because when you shut down you give all your power to the administration.”
Complicating his efforts is the fact that he is struggling with a narrow four-seat majority in Houses 221 to 212, which is down one seat now that Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Ut.) has resigned.
If Congress fails to properly fund the government and leans on the CR by January of next year, there will be an automatic spending cut of 1%, according to the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
McCarthy’s Democratic counterpart, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) described the Republican Party as engaged in a nasty “civil war.”

“Let’s be clear, House Republicans are in a civil war,” Jeffries said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“We urge our fellow Republicans in the House to join us, stop fighting among ourselves, end this reckless and reprehensible Republican civil war and let’s deal with the American people.”
The House has 13 calendar days and eight legislative days to resolve the impasse and keep the government lights on.
