Kidnap hoaxer Sherri Papini sobs on the stand as she faces ex-husband in court for divorce proceedings

Sherri Papini, the California woman who faked her own kidnapping to be with an ex-lover, sobbed in court last week as she argued she deserved a fair share of the money she and her ex-husband earned as a couple.

The 41-year-old mother looked somber and wiped away tears as she took the stand on October 23 in her fight to get her share of the insurance payout her ex-husband Keith received following the Fawn fire. Shasta County’s big catch in October 2021.

She claims Keith controlled all the finances and left her with nothing, even though she paid her share of family expenses before faking her own kidnapping in 2016, according to ABC News.

But Keith, 39, claimed all the funds had been used for living expenses and a $500-a-month allowance for his mother when she and their two children lived with him.

He also argued in court papers that Sherri racked up credit card debt that she had no way of paying.

Statements included in court documents show Sherri spent $571.72 on an Airbnb in Montague, Calif., made a $254.79 purchase at a local Walmart, spent another $3,200 at Best Buy, and paid two bills of $149.08 and $218.53 at Kohl’s, according to the Daily Mail.

Other charges include payments to Amazon, including Prime membership.

The hearing comes just weeks after the mother of two failed to show up for another hearing when her attorney said she was having trouble getting hold of Sherri, KRCR reported at the time.

Keith also claimed his legal team refused to speak to him because he was seeking full custody of their two children.

He has temporary custody of the children as the divorce proceedings continue.

Keith filed for divorce in April 2022, just days after Sherri pleaded guilty to the kidnapping scheme.

Prosecutors said Papini began planning a kidnapping scam to get back with an ex, James Reyes, around December 2015 and ordered him to get a prepaid cell phone.

On November 2, 2016, Papini texted Reyes and told him to pick him up from the trail where he claimed he was out jogging.

He reappeared three weeks later on Thanksgiving near Woodland, wearing chains around his waist and arms.

He told police two Hispanic women kidnapped him at gunpoint.

Her lie fell apart after investigators found her DNA on a piece of clothing that led to her ex-boyfriend, who dropped her off at Woodland when he decided to show up again.

Papini was arrested in March 2022, more than five years after his disappearance, and was released from prison late last month.
