Kim Petras Reveal Madonna’s 4 Words That Helped Her Through Historic Grammy Performance

Madonna is one of Kim Petras biggest supporters!

The 30-year-old German revealed the words of encouragement the Queen of Pop whispered to her before her Grammy performance earlier this year. Madonna introduced Petras and collaborator Sam Smith to the awards stage to perform their 2022 smash “Unholy,” shortly after it made history for both performers by winning the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Celebrities and the audience at home were mesmerized when Petras and Smith took the stage for their transgressive performance at the 2023 Grammys in February.

However, it turns out that the “I Don’t Want It At All” singer wouldn’t have been able to blow people’s minds if Madonna hadn’t offered some helpful advice before she took over the microphone. Reflecting on the moments leading up to his big performance, Petras told PEOPLE:

“I was very nervous. I panicked. After his speech, he turned and said to me, ‘Go get it, b**ch.’ That made me feel like, I got this.”

The “Like a Virgin” hitmaker didn’t stop there as she later took to Instagram to share why supporting the music duo is a priority for her. He wrote:

“It was an honor for me to Introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith at the Grammys. I want to give the last award which is album of the year, but I think it’s more important that I present the first trans- woman to perform at the Grammys— a History making moment!! And on top of that he won a Grammy!!”

The public’s display of support made Madonna, from whom Petras took inspiration, even more important to trans artists. He stated that he always felt a “special connection” between him and the “Die Another Day” actor, sharing that it might be because the 64-year-old doesn’t “gender push, and he’s not necessarily super-feminine or super-masculine.”

“I think Madonna gave me a lot of hope and strength and stuff when I needed it, even as a kid,” he added. The “Future Starts Now” singer was on top of the world when she won her first Grammy award and she had a lot to say during her acceptance speech. Appreciating his collaborators, he said:

“Sam is honored to have me receive this award because I am the first transgender woman to win. Sam, you are an angel and a true hero in my life. I love you.”

Still praising the “Too Good at Goodbyes” singer, Petra admitted that she has “been a special friend and supporter” of hers, which made them winning the award together even more special. In his words, which came via an Instagram post:

“It’s special to share this with someone who has given me important advice in my life, dealing with people’s opinions. I feel like I have learned so much. Sam will never get rid of me, and we will sing that song forever.”

He begins by revealing that his childhood was not bright as he was “very suicidal as a child” and would have disgraced himself long ago if not for his parents’ belief in his talent.

The revelation seemed to explain why he delivered a message of appreciation to “the people responsible for me being alive” during the Grammy Awards ceremony. In addition, Petras expressed concern about the widespread and uncontrolled transphobia exhibited by members of the community, declaring:

“I hate that another generation is going through this, and I hate that young people are going through the same thing** that I went through, and that hasn’t changed.”

The MTV Europe Music Award winner went on to share that it’s “sad” to see people have an agenda against LGBTQ people, as she “never understood why people are so obsessed with what people do to be happy.”

Despite those concerns, Petras has high hopes that his success and public achievements will help children who have difficulty “belonging” or “a place in society” “feel inspired” to be themselves.

Furthermore, Queerty Award recipients tell struggling youth that being true to their authentic selves will “reward” them for their talents rather than their gender or sexuality.
