The “R” after the King’s name signifies his new position as sovereign ruler. “R” stands for rex, which stands for “King” in Latin. During her important reign, Queen Elizabeth II would sign her name as “Elizabeth R.” The “R” in this context stands for “Regina,” which means “Queen” in Latin.
According to the news channel, this traditional signature has been used by kings since the 12th century. However, leaving a handwritten note on a loved one’s coffin may not have been a gesture that existed centuries ago. The sentimental act follows a Royal family tradition, which the Queen previously displayed at her late husband’s funeral.

At Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, her majesty slipped a similar handwritten note into the white flowers arranged on her husband’s coffin. Ending this loving moment, Her Majesty signed the card with her first name, “Lilibet.”
As for why the Queen chose to ditch her traditional signature for her childhood nickname, many believe she did so as a romantic gesture. Philip may have been the last person to ever refer to the king as “Lilibet.”
However, the truth behind the decision remains a mystery as the Palace did not share details on the matter, saying it was “personal.” For the Queen’s funeral, privacy went out the window as the world was allowed to witness the ruler’s final moments.

Inside Westminster Abbey, coffins are decorated according to the Royal Standard. On top of the coffin lay the Royal Crown, ball, and scepter, as well as colorful wreaths and Charles’ sweet note. Floral arrangements feature foliage from the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and the King’s country home, Highgrove House.
Symbolic plants such as Rosemary are included for memories, while myrtle is added to represent a happy marriage. Why did Charles choose such happy flowers for such a sad occasion? Because the King is romantic like his mother’s soul.
Almost 75 years ago, the Queen tied the knot with Prince Philip in the same aisle at Westminster in a beautiful ceremony in 1947. From this historic event, a sprig of myrtle in the royal wedding bouquet was used to grow a new plant.
