“The Big Sick” stars Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon recently opened up about how they’re handling life with Gordon’s propensity for illness. The couple married in 2007, shortly after the producer emerged from a medically induced coma.
Eight months after they first met, Gordon was diagnosed with a rare inflammatory syndrome known as adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD). The author was also diagnosed with an immune system disorder in 2017.
During the interview, the couple revealed that to curb the high possibility of Gordon contacting COVID-19, they maintain a very strict curfew and only leave the house when absolutely necessary, such as for the 43-year-old’s doctor’s appointment.

Emily Gordon Diagnosed With COVID
Nanjiani and Gordon recently joined People’s Magazine to talk about how they are coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, especially with the health conditions of producers. Since his diagnosis in 2007, Gordon has lived with an inflammatory syndrome.

Ten years after the AOSD diagnosis, the 43-year-old was given another diagnosis for an immune deficiency disease that causes the body to produce insufficient antibodies to protect the individual. This disease, common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), also leads to an increased risk of infection for patients.
During the interview, Gordon revealed that when the outbreak happened, he felt like people were finally able to see life from his point of view. He added, “Basically, my body doesn’t make things that help me fight off illness – anywhere from a major illness to your regular flu. So I’ve had to be careful for years now.”
Emily Gordon And Kumail Nanjiani Locked Up Tight
Gordon further revealed that prior to the outbreak, he had suffered from several illnesses. His health condition became even more frightening after the author realized that he was more likely to be at higher risk than most people in terms of contracting COVID-19.

To make sure this didn’t happen, Nanjiani revealed that they were very strict with their closure and, for a year and a half, hardly went out except for meetings with Gordon’s doctor.
The cautious behavior continued even after both were vaccinated. The 44-year-old man admitted that he always thought long and hard before leaving the house due to his wife’s health. Nanjiani explained, “It has become our habit to avoid everything. So now it’s a bit of an adjustment to be able to do some things.”
He continued, “For me, it’s a transition from just surviving to thriving, trying to get back to some kind of normalcy. Taking risks every time we do anything.”
He’s ‘Healthier’ During the Pandemic
According to Gordon, he became healthier during the outbreak because they strictly followed the curfew. He remembers going to see family members and attending events with the knowledge and acceptance that he might come down with something afterward.

The 43-year-old explained, “In a lot of ways, I became healthier in the outbreak because suddenly I wasn’t around other people’s germs. Other people’s germs have always been my kryptonite. But it felt exciting to finally say, ‘Oh, this is what it feels like to not be sick every few months. This is actually quite good.’ I got a weird sense of what it’s like to be completely healthy, which is a really sad thing because I just said it out loud.”
Kumail Nanjiani And Emily Gordon Collaborate With AstraZeneca
Gordon further revealed to Many people that despite living with AOSD and CVID for many years, he was tired of living in fear. He said, “For people with immune disorders, we often have to live in fear. I’m not interested in living in fear.”
The pair recently collaborated with AstraZeneca on their educational campaign, “Up The Antibodies.” The campaign was reportedly set up to enlighten those with weakened immune systems about the options they can choose to stay healthy during the ongoing pandemic.

Gordon revealed that he was disappointed to always see immunocompromised and elderly people excluded when talking about people returning to their daily routines. The new project reportedly puts this tribe of people “front and center” in the matter.
The 43-year-old added, “The only way for me to be really confident about my health is to stay indoors and never leave the house. And I’m not interested in living that kind of life. That’s why I’m so happy to be involved with this campaign because I hope to bring more advocacy, more research, more information, more stories because that way we can all be armed with the most important thing, which is information. We haven’t had that in a long time.”
