Inspired by his daughter — real name Elizabeth Grant who rose to stardom, the 69-year-old is in the spotlight with his debut album “Lost at Sea,” which will be released this Friday. Despite a diverse career background as an advertising copywriter, restaurant owner, boat builder and furniture store owner, Grant’s true passion lies in his love of the ocean.
This passion has influenced his debut album, a collection of 14 piano-based songs mostly featuring instrumental compositions, with some unique collaborations with the 37-year-old.
He revealed to PEOPLE, “When I play the piano, I often drift into an almost hypnotic state,” recalling countless sailing and fishing memories from his Rhode Island childhood.
The “Hollywood Bowl” artist stated that his passion for sailing began at a young age, around 15 years old, when he began to explore on his own and found solace on the water. During this time, he dabbled in playing the piano, unearthing his natural musical abilities without formal training, a skill that remains unknown today.

Grant recalls that while working in the corporate space, he jumped at the chance to work with his cousin and country songwriter, Phil Madeira, in Nashville. After creating a light song titled “Big Bubba”, they pitched it to a publishing company on Nashville’s Music Row but were rejected.
Looking back on the “Don’t Call Me Angel” singer’s career, she expressed immense pride in her accomplishments, stating, “I’m so proud.” As he made his mark in the music industry, she observed his journey from a supportive and protective position, noting how “he survived and continued to make music. He held on to his unique aesthetic.”
By 2021, Del Ray had created his album “Blue Banisters,” Grant’s musical talent came to the fore after he heard his piano improvisation sessions. In no time, they had created the album’s final song, “Sweet Carolina.”
After announcing his album in February, Grant received attention online from fans who affectionately dubbed him “Nepo Daddy,” in recognition of his daughter’s existing musical success.
Embracing the playful nickname, the entrepreneur humorously says, “I thought, ‘Oh, s—, that’s great. I need to get that domain.’ I want to make merchandise. I want to create a brand around this.”
Grant proudly accepts his new title, welcoming the various nicknames his supporters have bestowed upon him, including “Robster, Daddy Del Rey, Papa Del Rey, Lobster Lobster, and now Nepo Daddy.”
