“Top Chef” star Howie Kleinberg died over the weekend. She told the Miami Herald, “I just found out how many lives he touched,” she said of her son, who owned and operated Bulldog Barbecue in North Miami for 10 years.
His funeral was held on Tuesday morning surrounded by his family and friends. Along with his immediate family, his Top Chef family was also saddened to learn of his passing. Howie appeared on the show in season 3 after Terry Zarikian, culinary director of the South Beach food festival, recommended him for Bravo’s cooking competition series. Four months before the unprecedented event, Howie had started working at Coconut Grove, Florida’s Peacock Garden Resto Bar + Grill as executive chef. “We at Peacock Garden are saddened by the passing of chef Howie Kleinberg,” the restaurant said in a statement. “Howie was a valued member of our team and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family”.
Howie worked to promote charities near and dear to him throughout his illustrious career as a chef, which began in the kitchen of the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami. He contributes to “Taste of the Nation,” which raises money to fight childhood hunger. As well as having a rescue dog named Skye at the time of her death, she also campaigned to raise money for animal shelters.
