LeBron James May Skip Lakers Game For Son Bronny’s USC Debut

Four months after suffering a heart attack during basketball practice, Bronny James has been cleared to return to the court with his team.

The James family learned Thursday that Bronny was officially cleared to resume basketball. After a final checkup from USC this week, Bronny will return to team practice and soon play in his first college game. And while his father, LA Lakers star LeBron James, has a busy schedule with his team, he said he would skip his own games to be at his son’s first college game if necessary.

‘Family is everything’

LeBron told reporters he was “excited” for Bronny’s first game.

“I’m looking forward to his first game. Every time he was released and when he was ready for his first game, I already told my teammates that if they play on the same day we play, I have to catch the next game,” he said. “Family is everything. I’ll definitely have to see Bronny’s first college game when he’s up and ready to go.”

According to CBS Sports, USC only has one home game in Los Angeles in December, which means Bronny’s first game will likely be on the sidelines. This increases the chance that LeBron will have to miss one of his own games to watch his son’s debut.

USC’s home opener is scheduled for Dec. 10, with two road games at Alabama to follow – one against Auburn and one against Alabama State. The Lakers do not have games scheduled on the same day as those games, but they do have games scheduled on Dec. 28 and Dec. 30, which is when USC plays at Oregon.

A family spokesman said in a statement that Bronny, 19, will have one final evaluation with the USC staff this week and will resume training with his team next week. He will be able to play in the game “soon,” the statement said.

“The cardiologist has cleared it, that’s good,” coach Andy Enfield said after practice on Thursday. “And now it’s a matter of getting him back on the court next week hopefully to start training with full team contact.”

As for when Bronny will make his debut, Enfield said, “That’s not my decision and it’s probably too early to speculate.”

“He hasn’t played basketball in a few months, so we’ll be patient with him and as soon as we get the green light we’ll get him into the game,” added Enfield.

According to USA Today, LeBron said his son is handling his recovery well and has had no setbacks.

“We have great doctors all the time telling us they believe things are going to work out in our favor, so Bronny takes care of his business,” LeBron said. “He did everything and did not experience any obstacles. Do not try to speed up the recovery process. He takes every step according to plan.”

Bronny suffered a heart attack in July while working out at the Galen Center with his team. It was later determined that he had a treatable congenital heart defect.

“When you go through something like this, it puts everything into perspective and really understands that nothing else matters other than the people you love at the time,” LeBron said. “Just stop everything you’re doing and it’s really, ‘How do we help him or help your loved one get better?'”

Bronny’s teammates are excited to welcome him back to the ring.

“We’re excited, but we’ll be even more excited when he’s actually out there with us playing. That’s definitely the part we miss,” teammate Boogie Ellis said.

Another teammate, Kijani Wright, who also played in high school with Bronny, “We’re all ready to get him back. It’s just going to be another component of the controller that we have, add more fire.”
