Letitia Wright, 29, was featured in Variety’s cover story this week, where she opened up about Boseman’s death, which was shocking because no one knew about his colon cancer because he kept it a secret.

“I didn’t put the dots together,” Wright said. “Bro is very private. He always wants to protect us. That’s all I can say.”

Wright learned of Boseman’s death when he woke up in London in the early hours of August 29, 2020. He looked at his phone and saw the words “My condolences,” but had no idea who they were talking to. “So I was just like, ‘Condolences’ for what? What is this guy talking about?,” he told Variety.

He proceeded to look at his phone (Wright had two phones, one for the UK and one for the US) and found several missed calls, emails and text messages, all mentioning Boseman’s name. One of his representatives, asked if he wanted to issue a statement. However, his mind refused to accept what happened.

“Is someone trying to play a trick on me?” he asked himself then. “This is not a good joke. This is not OK. And I just did the first thing anyone would do: I called Chad.” There was no answer, so he texted the number: “Hey Bro, this is Tish. Please pick up.”

Wright later called her “Black Panther” co-star Daniel Kaluuya. “I was like, ‘Yo, I think everybody’s tripping right now. I’m giving you like five seconds to tell me that this isn’t true,’” Wright explained what he said at the time. “He was very quiet. I was like, ‘OK, well, if you don’t want to tell me, I’m going to keep calling Chad until he answers.’

When she started calling Boseman’s number, Kaluuya said two words that ended up touching her heart. “His family…”

For months after Boseman’s death, Wright struggled to cope. In fact, he also lost sleep and sent her into what she described as a “downward spiral.”

“It haunted me for months because I wasn’t able to say goodbye to him or be around my Black Panther family to share in that moment,” Wright told Variety. “I had to do it myself.”

He continued, “Like, bless Daniel [Kaluuya] — he came to see me and so on. But it is not enough. I want to book a flight that day.”
