Josephine Wright, the 94-year-old “hero” who made headlines in 2023 for her legal battle with Hilton Head Island land developers to keep her family’s property has died.
Through GoFundMe, Wright was able to raise more than $366,000 to help with his legal fees. Actor and producer Tyler Perry was in the process of building another home for Wright and his family at the time of his death. He took to social media to share his grief and pay tribute to the woman who “inspired” him.

Perry, who is in the development phase of building Wright and his family a new home, took to Facebook to share his sadness upon hearing of Wright’s passing.
“I am so saddened to hear of the passing of this warrior, Miss Josephine Wright, although we spoke on the phone, I was very much looking forward to meeting you in person next month to hand over the keys to your new home, but God has other plans,” he wrote. “My prayer is that you rest in peace because I will honor the commitment I made to you. I know you will watch over all of us because I have the same key to your family.”
He went on to say that his four children, 40 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren will be able to “gather in YOUR house on YOUR land and tell the world what a fighter you were.”
He ended his post by sharing that Wright “fought an incredible fight” and that he had “inspired” him.
Thousands of condolences and support flooded the comments section of Perry’s post.
“I am so glad he can know that he has won THIS battle and that his family will always be able to gather on their land and their home there after he has gone to be with God. Thank you, Tyler Perry for doing something we all hope for,” shared one.
Another added, “Rest Ms. Wright. You are an inspiration to us. Mr. Tyler Perry, you are amazing! You are a super hero! This post really touched me. Thank you for setting an example by making and keeping your word.”
Many others also wrote about how sad they were to hear of his death and thanked Perry for sticking to his word and helping the family.

On Monday, Wright’s family shared the news of his death on a GoFundMe page that received so much love and attention.
“It is with heavy hearts that the Wright Family announces the passing of our beloved parent, Mrs. Josephine Wright, who passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024, surrounded by family, loved ones, and prayers. His legacy as a pillar of strength, wisdom, and commitment to justice will remain forever engraved in our hearts,” they wrote with emotion.
“While we are deeply saddened by this loss, we find solace in knowing that Mrs. Wright’s spirit lives on through the Josephine Wright Foundation,” they continued. “From the bottom of our hearts, we express our sincere appreciation for the outpouring of love, condolences, and acts of kindness. Your solidarity in this time of grief has touched our family deeply.”
For anyone interested in attending his service, it will be held on January 13 at 1pm at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The family will provide a link to the virtual service for anyone who wishes to attend virtually. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
