Actor Liam Neeson is best known for his role as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in “The Phantom Menace.”
Since then, he has often been asked if he would return to reprise the role in the future. Although he made a brief cameo appearance in the series finale of the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” it looks like Star Wars fans shouldn’t expect the 70-year-old actor to star in his own Disney+ series anytime soon.
Liam Neeson claims ‘Star Wars’ shows have ‘taken away the mystery and wonder’
In a recent interview on “Watch What Happens Live!” Neeson told host Andy Cohen that he felt there were too many Star Wars spinoffs out there that were “diluting” the franchise.
When asked if he was interested in returning, Neeson replied, “No, I’m not,” adding, “There are a lot of spin-offs of ‘Star Wars.’ It melted it for me, and it took away the mystery and the wonder in a strange way.”
Last year, ahead of his brief appearance in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Neeson told ComicBook.com that he would consider reprising his role as Qui-Gon Jinn if he appeared in a movie, not a television show. When asked about the possibility of returning to a galaxy far, far away, Neeson said, “Oh, I think so, yes, yes, yes, I think so … if it’s a movie.”
“Yeah, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to TV, I must admit,” he added. “I just love the big screen, you know? Qui-Gon, I can’t believe it’s been 24 years since we made ‘The Phantom Menace,’ I can’t believe where the time has flown. It was a great experience, shooting that movie in London.”
That said, Liam Neeson doesn’t want anyone else to play Genie Qui-Gon!

Shortly after the climax of “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Liam Neeson spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and listed various reasons why he decided to appear in the last minute of the final episode.
“I really don’t want anyone else to play Qui-Gon Jinn, and I want to show my respect to George [Lucas] and the mythical world he created,” Neeson explained in June 2022. “Also, Ewan [McGregor] is a friend, and I loved working with him on The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”
Although the prequel trilogy was not well received by fans when it was first released, Neeson claims that he has always been a fan of the film.
Back in 2020, Neeson told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy channel that he always loved “The Phantom Menace,” adding, “I’m proud of it and proud to be a part of it. I got to be a Jedi. I got to play with lightsabers and stuff that’s beautiful. It’s great, Andy, it’s really great.”
Liam Neeson May Be Done With Big Budget Movies In General

In a February 2020 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Neeson said that he was done with big budget movies, naming superhero movies in particular. “I’m not really a big fan of the genre,” he said. “I thought it was Hollywood with all the bells and whistles and technical achievements and things – which I admired – but I had no desire to go to the gym for three hours every day to pump myself up to wear a Velcro suit with a cape.”
“I admire actors and I know quite a few actors who do it – and do it brilliantly,” he continued. “It’s not my genre, not really. The first Star Wars, I was in it, which was 22 years ago, and I enjoyed it because it was a novel and it was new. I act with a tennis ball, which will eventually become a fuzzy furry creature and such. That’s interesting, acting wise, to try and make it seem real, but that’s the last one. It was quite exhausting.”

However, it seems Neeson hasn’t given up on the franchise entirely. In October 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Liam Neeson was in talks to star in a reboot of the comedy film franchise “The Naked Gun”.
Plot details on the reboot are reportedly being kept under wraps for now, but Family’s Guy’s Seth MacFarlane will produce the film under the Fuzzy Door Banner.
Liam Neeson has yet to officially join the project, which currently has no scheduled release date.
