Teen social media sensation Lil Tay went viral this month after someone posted a fake statement on Instagram saying that she and her brother, Jason, had died.
The YouTuber stopped posting on Instagram in 2018 amid a violent custody battle between her parents, in which her older brother had alleged abuse. Fans assumed the worst but were shocked when Lil Tay released a statement saying that he wasn’t dead, but that he was the victim of a hacker.

There are new developments in the custody battle between Lil Tay’s parents, Angela Tian and Christopher Hope. On Friday, Angela’s attorney Lorne MacLean, KC, and Fraser MacLean told TMZ that Christopher has been ordered to pay $275,000 in back child support since 2014. Despite his controversial videos, he gained over three million subscribers before suddenly going silent in 2018 following a court order. Angela also told the outlet on Friday that the family has been “in a constant state of depression” due to the ongoing custody battle and called it a big win for the family. He also slammed Christopher’s “disgusting financial motivation” amid the legal drama.
“I have suffered financial losses for fighting for my daughter’s rights and freedoms that should never have been taken away from the beginning. We have won our case in court and my children and I can finally move on from this nightmare,” he said. “My daughter can pursue and achieve her dreams on her own terms, and we can finally be a happy family again, together.”
Both parents wanted Lil Tay to be a rising star in the entertainment industry when she was just 8 years old. Although his mother approved of his social media content, his father wanted him to pursue a more conventional approach to fame, such as singing or acting.
Tay’s Ex-Manager Harry Tsang Questions If He Was Really Hacked

Although Meta has confirmed that they had to help Lil Tay into his account, his former manager Harry Tsang questioned whether the death hoax was done as a publicity stunt to get the kid’s name back in the headlines.
“When I learned about Lil Tay’s claims about his well-being, I was relieved that he was safe. However, I believe the reported hacking incident may not have happened,” he wrote in a statement to the Daily Mail. “My rationale for this perspective is two-fold: first, the recovery of compromised accounts on platforms like Meta/Instagram usually does not require a 24-hour period,” although Meta has now confirmed that its account was indeed hacked.

“Secondly, the actions of Lil Tay’s brother, who is known for his tendency to take extreme actions, led me to hypothesize an alternative motive behind this incident,” he added. Lil Tay’s brother, Jason, hasn’t talked about the death hoax or a possible career comeback for his sister.
“At the same time, if the underlying motive is indeed to rekindle Lil Tay’s prominence in the public sphere, I think that such actions show a certain level of irresponsibility,” added Tsang. “It is important to consider the potential impact of using such tactics, particularly given their potential impact on wider audience perceptions and sentiment.”
