Lily Allen Claims Having Children ‘Totally Ruined’ Her Pop Career

British singer-songwriter Lily Allen has opened up about what she thinks is holding back her pop career. Allen admitted that having children was an event that “really ruined” his career, as he prioritized them over work.

The singer-turned-actress stated that her decision was influenced by the fact that her parents were “quite absent” in her life as a child and that she did not want to repeat the same pattern for her two daughters.

During a recent conversation on the “Radio Times” podcast, the “Smile” singer opened up about events that she thinks negatively affected her pop career, according to Daily Mail.

Allen noted that she “couldn’t seem to have it all,” as she was faced with the choice of prioritizing her career over her children at the time. He chose to prioritize the latter over the former and has now admitted that they “really ruined” his career.

“My children are ruining my career. I love them, and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom, they really ruined it,” he shared. “I get really angry when people say you can have it all because, frankly, you can’t.”

Allen later revealed the reason why he chose to put his children before his career. He recounted how his parents were “quite absent” from his life as a child and that he did not want to repeat the lives of his children.

The “It’s Not Me, It’s You” singer is the daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. Her parents’ marriage fell apart when she was just four years old, which she says left her with some “bad scars.”

“Some people choose their careers over their children, and that’s their right, but my parents were pretty absent when I was little,” she said. “I think it left some bad scars that I’m not willing to repeat.”

She later stated that she was quite happy with her decision to “step back and focus on my kids,” because “they’re pretty good.”

Allen shares two daughters, Ethel Mary, 12, and Marnie Rose, 10, with ex-partner Sam Cooper, 45. She currently lives in New York with her children and her husband, actor David Harbour, whom she married in 2020.

According to Daily Mail, Allen previously lamented how he neglected his children while he battled drug addiction and financial problems.

At the time, his family was going through a tough time with Allen having to go on tour with Miley Cyrus in support of her “Bangerz Tour”, where he fell into a downward spiral.

During a conversation with DJ Fat Tony on “The Recovery” podcast, Allen said he wasn’t mentally ready to leave his children, and when he did, he started abusing alcohol and drugs.

“I got married when I was 24 years old and I had a baby, I had a baby who died 10 years ago this month,” he said at the time. “And then I had two successful pregnancies, and then about six months after my youngest was born, we ran out of money, and I had to go back on the road again. But I’m 14 and don’t feel like a pop star at all…”
