In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyDepp opened up about his early relationship with Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, his co-star on “The Idol.”
He shared that he often avoids being in the same room as the Grammy winner whenever he gets into “his zone.”
“I don’t think anybody is using the full method — nobody’s out of their mind,” Depp told the news outlet on Friday, per Many people.
He added, “Well, sometimes when Abel will get — I don’t want to reveal too much about where Abel’s character goes, but when he’s in full Tedros mode sometimes, I’ll avoid him. I’ll say, ‘He is in the zone now.’”
Depp stated that the mood on set was usually “light”, which helped the actors deal with the emotional and heavy nature of the film.
She said, “We laugh a lot, listen to a lot of music and dance, and it’s that kind of energy that makes the tougher moments easier and possible.”

‘The Idol’ recently made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving a five-minute standing ovation from the audience. However, externally, it has faced criticism for its raunchy content, with Depp taking the brunt of it all.
“Rarely a scene goes by without the camera showing a flash of her breasts or**,” comments by Hollywood Reporter said of Depp’s character, Jocelyn. It continued, “You start to wonder if this is building to anything, and by episode two, it looks like it might not.”
Another scathing review described the show as a “Pornhub home page adventure”, while another claimed that explicit scenes from Depp were not the kind of content that should be playing at Cannes.

Following the backlash, the actor came out in defense of his character’s “absence”, saying it was an important part of his personality as “a born and bred entertainer.”
Depp said of Jocelyn, per Daily Mail, “’The way he dresses, for example, is that he’s trying to tell you something all the time… or express his feelings in some kind of way. I also think that the stupidity of the character occasionally mirrors the stupidity that we can see emotionally in him.”
Depp also stated that he was very “involved in the creation of this character and the intricacies of how he expresses himself.”
The show’s producer, Sam Levinson, confirmed his claims during a speech at Cannes after its premiere.
At the time, she shared that she and Depp had “a lot of discussions” about “who Jocelyn is as a person,” adding that the character has “such a strong sense of self and such a strong sense of sexuality.”

In addition to Depp being slammed for his character’s “nudity,” rumors also swirled that the show’s set was “toxic” in March. Levinson was also accused of introducing excessive nudity, sex and violence in the show on exploitative grounds.
However, Depp denied the rumours, saying Levinson was “the best director I’ve ever worked with” for “so many reasons.”
He added, per Page Six“I’ve never felt more supported or respected in a creative space, my input and opinion more valued.”
“Working with Sam was a true collaboration in every way – it mattered to him, more than anything else, not only what his actors thought of the work, but how we felt about it.”
Depp also praised Levinson for simply “creating an environment” where he felt “seen, heard and appreciated.”
