‘The Crown’ producers claim filming Diana’s deadly car crash took ‘enormous sensitivity’

When “The Crown” wraps up its sixth and final season later this year, anxiously waiting fans will finally see how Princess Diana’s tragic death will play out on screen.

Executive producers Andy Harries and Suzanne Mackie have claimed that they filmed the departure of Diana (played by Elizabeth Debicki) with “tremendous sensitivity.”

The couple stated that the death scene – the Princess of Wales died at the age of 36 in 1997 in a fiery car crash in Paris – will be shown in an earlier episode of the season, according to Deadline.

“The show might be big and loud, but we’re not. We are thoughtful people and we are sensitive people. There were very careful and long conversations about how we were going to do it,” Mackie recently explained about the Netflix series at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

“The audience will judge in the end, but I think it’s been recreated carefully and thoroughly,” he said.

“Elizabeth Debicki is an incredible actress, and she is very thoughtful and considerate. He loves Diana. There was a huge amount of respect from all of us — I hope that shows,” added Mackie.

The Post has reached out to Netflix for comment.

In October, “The Crown” came under fire for filming death scenes. According to the Irish Sun, scenes showing Diana’s accident have “sparked outrage”.

“To return to Paris and turn Diana’s last days and hours into a drama felt very uncomfortable. In the end, some of the crew refused,” a source told the Sun.

“The show has always tried to present a fictionalized version of royal history with as much sensitivity as possible. But lately, as things get closer to today, it feels harder to strike that balance. With some moments still fresh and poignant, it felt as if a line was being crossed.”

Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022 while the cast was filming the series. At the Edinburgh festival, Harries also discussed how the king’s death affected the creative process behind the scenes.

“His Majesty’s passing has affected us all… It has not changed [the story] basically, but it has changed it in a sense. When you see it, I think you’ll know what I mean,” said Harry. “It’s a very powerful film and a very respectful episode.”

Mackie added that the show was a “love letter” to the king from creator Peter Morgan.

The final season of “The Crown” will take place in the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, depicting events including Tony Blair’s time as prime minister, the first meeting of Prince William and Kate Middleton and more.

Another major event that will feature this season is after Prince Harry’s infamous Nazi costume scandal in 2005.

The Duke of Sussex, now 38, wore a Nazi officer’s uniform to a costume party at the time.
