Since rising to fame in 2019, Lizzo has released hit after hit and established herself as a force in the music industry. However, the superstar reflected on his life before fame and the trauma he still faces from those years. He talked about being homeless and living out of his car during Thanksgiving in 2009 and said it was an experience that still scares him.
Lizzo has previously talked about how she manages the experience with fans during a TikTok Q&A session. She admitted not staying positive while living in her car and said the only thing that helped was remembering the experience was only part of her story. Lizzo also discusses the experience in her new documentary on HBO Max, “Love, Lizzo.”

Lizzo Talks About Her Thanksgiving Trauma

Shortly after Lizzo’s father died in 2009, she lost her job, was kicked out of her apartment, and was forced to live in her 1998 Subaru. Her new HBO documentary includes clips of the singer discussing her memories of that time, including a Thanksgiving she spent crying in the car.
Lizzo recently had an interview with Diversity and discusses how Thanksgiving now creates fear and anxiety for him. He said, “This is a trauma that I hope we can avoid because I’m still working through that trauma. Like, that has come up in a lot of places in my life.
The “About Damn Time” singer continued, “I was like, ‘Damn,’ in 2009 [and I’m] still worried I still feel like something is going to be taken away from me. I’m still scared, and I think it’s unfortunate.” Lizzo explained that she is now grateful for everything she has, such as her own home, family and friends who love her and her fans around the world.

During a September Q&A with fans on TikTok, Lizzo was asked about how she maintains her positivity while being homeless and living out of her car. The question reads, “Hey, girl! When you live out of your car, what are some of the thoughts you need to stay positive? Need hope.”
In the video response, Lizzo gets emotional as she admits that she doesn’t stay positive. She said, “I don’t know what’s going to happen in my life, what’s going to happen… I feel devastated.” What helped him, though, was remembering that it was only part of his story, and now he’s in a better place and knows he survived.
In the comments, fans sympathized with the singer’s experience, with supportive comments like “thank you for sharing this, thank you for being real.” Another comment read, “Positive culture can be very toxic and unhelpful. thank you for saying this. Life can be very hard sometimes.”
Lizzo Will Be Launching A Special Concert Soon

In addition to the HBO documentary, Lizzo is preparing to release a concert special, titled “Lizzo: Live in Concert.” The special premieres on HBO Max on New Year’s Eve. He also talked about current specials Diversity interview and shared his excitement for its release.
He said, “I’m excited because I’m not playing to be a live entertainer. I think when people realize the microphone is on, the choreo is being choreographed, the looks are visible, the Big Grrls are on point, the band is on point, Sophia Eris and I are on point, people will really realize, ‘Oh this is serious!’”
Lizzo also shared that she thinks her fans and audience will “have a lot of fun watching the concert.” He explained that it will be great entertainment for “people who have nothing to do on New Year’s Eve, so now they can pop a bottle of champagne or apple juice and they can watch Lizzo’s show and it’s a great show.”
