A group of young robbers went on a rampage in Philadelphia Tuesday night, stealing from several stores on a spree unrelated to earlier peaceful protests against a judge’s decision to drop charges against a police officer who fatally shot Eddie Irizarry, police said.
The unruly crowd outnumbered responding officers as they went to the store to stock up in Center City — lifting merchandise and stuffing the loot into large plastic bags, CBS Philadelphia reported.
The shoplifter hit a Foot Locker and Apple store near 15th and Chestnut Streets and a Lululemon in Rittenhouse Square and is accused of assaulting a security guard at the shoe store, according to local stations.
Police said they have made several arrests in connection with the mass shoplifting incident.
The robbery was unrelated to demonstrations held earlier in the day over the dismissal of charges in the Irizarry case, several Philadelphia police commanders told the media.

Municipal Judge Wendy Pew dismissed all charges — including murder, manslaughter, official oppression and more — against Philadelphia Officer Mark Dial who shot Irizarry, 27, through the rolled-up window of his car during a traffic stop on Aug. 14.
Pew said he “100%” agreed with Dial’s defense attorney who argued that police were acting in self-defense when he fired his gun six times at Irizarry, believing he had a gun.
Irizarry, who was pulled over for reckless driving after a short chase, had a knife near his leg that Dial’s partner testified he might have mistaken for a gun because of its dark handle.
Family members of the victim were shocked by the judge’s decision, which prosecutors plan to appeal.

“We will continue to fight for justice because it was wrong,” said Irizarry’s cousin Aracelis Brown, 28, in an interview after the hearing.
