Earlier this month, former “American Idol” star Oliver Steele defended Perry from backlash. Critics accused the singer of bullying contestants with his judge’s remarks after the show.

Steele was a finalist on season 21 and made an Instagram post claiming that Perry is “not a bully, he doesn’t embarrass people either.” During an interview on the “American Idol Unaired” podcast, he also called the “Dark Horse” singer a “great person” and said he quietly pushed her to improve herself.

The source said, “He went into it thinking he was going to nurture young talent. For his good intentions to be misconstrued, that’s not what he wanted. He has achieved so much in his career and is now seen as a bad reality show judge.”

They added that Perry was “frustrated” by fans who booed him, especially since he was just “trying to stay in his lane, do his job and go home.” The insider explained that the singer has “wanted to get out for some time now” and is considering leaving the role, which pays an estimated $25 million annually.

There’s Controversy About Katy Perry’s Behavior

Perry has struggled with various controversies regarding her treatment of “American Idol” contestants. One such incident was when the “Bunga Bunga” singer allegedly shamed Sara Beth Liebe by saying the contestant was “laying on the table too much.”

At the time, Liebe spoke about Perry’s “hurtful” comments on TikTok and said, “I think it’s hard enough to be a mother, and it’s hard enough to be a woman.” The singer ended up leaving the competition early to be home with her kids and, on Instagram, said she wasn’t upset with Perry.

Perry also received backlash for his treatment of contestants Nutsa Buzaladze and Carina DeAngelo. During the Hollywood Week showcase, the singer told the duo that their performances were underwhelming.

Amidst the controversy, sources are speaking out Page Six and said the singer has a “unique sense of humor.” They said Perry’s humor was easily misunderstood but “never malicious.” They added, “The backlash doesn’t bother Katy. It’s been a roller-coaster season with great talent, so he’s just doing his job.”
