You can’t go on a sold-out world tour at the age of 65 without setting certain standards, and for Madonna, that means punctuality!
The beloved Queen of Pop is the undisputed champion of the music industry, radiating boss vibes in everything she does. One of the “Material Girl” singer’s former backup dancers, Carrie Ann Inaba, recently reflected on working with the iconic singer in the ’90s and spilled some interesting details about the 65-year-old’s strict rules.
Carrie Ann Inaba Claims Madonna Punishes Late Dancers With Heavy Fines
Inaba’s recollection of his time with Madonna took place on Jennifer Hudson’s talk show. A clip of the “Dancing with the Stars” judge’s appearance has been shared on YouTube, capturing the TV personality raving about one of the greatest moments of her career.
At the age of 23, the choreographer’s skills made him a backup dancer in the “Vogue” singer’s tour. However, the opportunity comes with strict rules to ensure everyone performs their role efficiently for the Queen of Pop’s success. In Inaba’s words:
“Madonna is very successful. At that time, he was very strict. He gave us this one rule, which I’m so thankful he did. It was, for every minute you were late, you had to pay him $100 out of your pay.”
The revelation shocked Hudson, who hilariously replied, “I’m not going to lie, I’m going broke. Because I’m always late. Like I can do a lot of things, but I’m sorry I can’t be on time.” While the EGOT recipient bemoans his inability to keep up with scheduled appointments, Inaba, on the other hand, reaffirms his gratitude for Madonna’s $100 policy.
The “In Living Color” star said she “learned quickly” and adapted to the Pop culture icon system. “I’m never late,” the dancer chimed in, “I’m always early, even to the point where I waste half my day because you know you show up so early, like too early.”
Despite the strict work environment, Inaba convinced Hudson that it was the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as a backup dancer for the “La Isla Bonita” singer. Receiving a job offer at the age of 23 from one of the biggest entertainers of the 90s touched the TV personality so much that he considered early retirement.
“Some like Michael [Jackson], Prince, and Madonna at the time. Really? And I um, I went on Madonna’s tour, and I was like, ‘That’s all I need,'” the Honolulu native revealed, noting she went back to school after the tour ended. The entertainer recalls:
“I went back to school actually after that…UCLA and I started studying things like World Art and Culture. It’s pretty amazing. I was like, ‘I’m done. I toured with Madonna, I was good. I’m 23 years old, I’m going to retire.’”
Carrie Ann Inaba Kisses Madonna During ’90s World Tour
Inaba previously reflected on dancing with the Wembley Square of Fame recipient in the Girlie Show 1993 World Tour in 2010. The choreographer told Access Hollywood that she shared multiple kisses with the songstress, an opportunity that overshadowed the shoulder-length hair she had to cut for her job as a backup dancer.

“On that tour, when we all auditioned, [Madonna] said, ‘If you take this job, you all have to shave your heads,'” the media personality revealed, noting she was excited to be a “brave bald girl.” Regarding her kiss with Madonna, Inaba claimed the show’s anchors had tried to make someone among the jealous audience.
“Well, there was like a party on stage, and we did this, and that, and it felt really good, and one night my boyfriend was in the audience, and his friend at the time was in the audience…I’ I didn’t say if it was a boy or a girl, and they were in the audience,” the Honolulu native explained.
“And he was, I think, trying to tease them and trying to make them jealous, so he turned around, and I just saw this tongue coming at me, and we had this full-on makeout session on stage,” Inaba recalled. The sensual moment did not sit well with the dancer’s lover, who criticized him for kissing Madonna.
The “Fly Girls” star responded to his taunt by calling out the Golden Globe Award winner for the surprise kiss. In his defense, the “Hung Up” singer claimed the moment was an act. However, Inaba responded by saying: “If it’s acting, then we’ll do it every day in practice.”
“If you want to kiss me, you have to come to my room and knock on my door and ask me,” the dancer allegedly admonished Madonna. Despite his complaints, Inaba shared a second kiss with the music icon on the last night of the tour when the two played a game of truth or dare.
