Mama June Shannon is preparing for the worst as her daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell battles cancer.
In a preview ahead of Friday’s episode of “Mama June: Family Crisis,” Shannon’s parents are seen discussing the potential of taking care of Anna’s oldest child, Kaitlyn Elizabeth, if she dies from a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
Mama June Shannon Wants Kaitlyn In Her Care If Anna Dies
In the episode, which was recorded before Anna died of cancer last December, Mama June revealed her and her husband Justin Stroud’s plans to move to Georgia to be near Anna and her children over breakfast with her mother-in-law Roxanna.
While admitting that it’s a difficult topic to talk about, Mama June claims that “when the time comes, like when Anna’s going to die, Eldridge [Toney] had told us all that he wouldn’t be able to handle it [raising her kids]. So, like, I want to be able to have that place be like, ‘Okay, you can come here.’”

He then shared that Anna still hadn’t “worked out her affairs” before revealing that custody of Anna’s youngest child, Kylee, would automatically go to her father. Meanwhile, the situation with Kaitlyn remains uncertain as Eldridge has expressed his reluctance to take on the responsibility.
Despite Eldridge’s reluctance, Anna hoped he would “take Kaitlyn.” However, as Mama June declared, “When it’s time to do that… There’s always like – like it’s inevitable.” The reality star’s husband backed her up, saying, “It’s going to be a mess when it comes to the kids.”
The idea of chaos most likely prompted Stroud to express doubts about adequately caring for the 12-year-old when her mother asked if she and Mama June were ready for it.
The couple discussed it further in a joint confession when Mama June told her husband that, given Anna’s situation, they might end up raising Kaitlyn. Stroud replied, “You know I’m going to be here and do what I have to do to raise that little girl, but she’s got to get the paperwork and make it legal.”
For that, Mama June explained that giving up parental rights to children is not an easy thing. In the next scene, she tells her husband and mother that the thought of custody may be difficult for Anna to accept. In his words:
“At that point, it will become real for him. He will not be able to see his graduation; he is not this. He wouldn’t look at his 18 years as he realized, ‘F—, this is true. This is my destination.’”
Mama June Asks the Court to Reject Her Former Son-in-Law’s Custody Request
In addition to insisting on taking custody of her grandson, Mama June has also been in court requesting that the custody case brought by her former late daughter, Michael Cardwell, be thrown out.
As reported by The Blast, the former “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” star claimed that Michael abused Anna while they were together. She asserted that Michael often physically hurt Anna “and the child, and it would not be in the child’s best interest to be in [Michael’s] care and control.”
He also argued that Kylee often only visited Michael if Kaitlyn accompanied her. Michael’s attorney, Donald Lewis Roberts, immediately denied the accusations, declaring:
“Michael denies this allegation. This is the first time any of these allegations have been made against him. He and Anna had a good relationship when they were married and only separated due to differences in opinion and personalities.”
Additionally, Roberts explained that Michael and Anna were able to get along during the divorce and maintain good relations with his ex’s family. After stating that ex-partners always put their children first, the lawyer stated:
“We will look at the evidence that Ms Shannon has for this type of claim, this very serious claim, to be made against someone – if she has any evidence at all.”
