Mama June’s mourning period has been interrupted by a lawsuit from her ex-daughter Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell over custody of her daughter, Kaitlyn.
Michael Cardwell believes that although the 11-year-old is not his biological child, he has taken a parental role in her life and deserves full custody of the pre-teen.
Cardwell, sadly, passed away on December 10th following his battle with cancer. She was 29 years old and left behind two daughters, and Kaitlyn was placed in the care of her grandmother, Mama June.
Mama June Sues for Custody of Granddaughter By Her Ex-Deceased Daughter
Michael filed his lawsuit in Georgia court demanding custody of Kaitlyn. The aggrieved ex, who already has full custody of 8-year-old Kylee — his biological child — argued that he had “fully and completely assumed the role of a constant, undivided, committed and responsible parent” in Kaitlyn’s life.

According to court documents, he claims he “engaged in consistently caring for the child and creating an attached and dependent relationship with the child” encouraged by his former ex, Anna.
Michael explained that even though he and Anna ‘Chickadee’ divorced in 2017, he included Kaitlyn in his regular visitation schedule to see his daughter. He also stated that he had “an independent relationship with the child, which was fostered and supported by the child’s parents.”
An excerpt of the document obtained by The Sun reads, “Both the petitioner and the parents understand, acknowledge, accept and behave as if the petitioner is the child’s parent and accepts full and permanent responsibility as the child’s parent without expecting compensation financial. .”
In addition, he claims that he has been responsible for paying Kaitlyn’s school tuition. Michael also doesn’t hesitate to take a shot at Mama June’s parenting skills, arguing that she doesn’t deserve to have custody of Kaitlyn due to her troubled relationship with the late Anna.
“Anna was raised by her maternal grandmother in Griffin, Georgia since she was about eight years old and only returned to June Shannon’s home when she was 17,” he wrote. “Anna had a very abusive relationship with her mother throughout her life and went long periods of time without speaking to her.”
He also argued that Mama June’s presence in the 11-year-old’s life was “inconsistent.” Concluding, Anna’s ex-husband wrote, “Petitioner is the only living person who has shown a constant and continuing interest in the child’s welfare, and being in petitioner’s custody would be in the child’s best interest.” “
Michael’s filing was made in response to reports that Mama June took on the role of Kaitlyn’s guardian after Anna’s tragic death. According to a source close to the family, Mama June, whose real name is June Shannon, shares a strong bond with her first grandchild, and the family collectively agreed that placing Kaitlyn at her grandmother’s home was the most appropriate arrangement.

According to sources, Anna’s 11-year-old daughter unexpectedly spoke at her funeral, where she shared memories of her mother with the audience, crying and laughing. The brave pre-teen reportedly actively supported her mother during her battle with cancer, making sure she took her medication and providing constant companionship.
As for Kylee, who is with her father Michael, it is still uncertain whether she will consider therapy for the eight-year-old. According to her husband, Toney, Anna’s dying wish was for her children to carry on her legacy. He recalled in an interview:
“The day before he passed, we talked and said goodbye. Her dying wish was for her daughters to grow up knowing who their mother was. And I promise I’ll do right by those girls always. I will spend my life doing right by Anna and those girls.”
