A man was found tortured to death in an enclosure at a Pakistani zoo after cleaners came across a big cat with a shoe in its mouth.
The gruesome discovery was made at Sherbagh Bahawalpur Zoo in Punjab Province on Wednesday.
“When they cleaned the zoo and the nest, they found [animal] holding a shoe in his mouth,” Zaheer Anwar, a senior local government official, told the media.
“The staff got suspicious and then they found a body in the nest,” he added.
It is not clear what kind of big cat it is because Anwar used a word that could mean a tiger or a leopard, both of which are believed to be housed at the zoo, although some local media reported that it was a tiger.
The victim of the attack has not been identified, and it is unclear how he ended up in the animal enclosure.

“Our assessment so far is that this looks like a lunatic, because a sane person wouldn’t jump into a cave,” Anwar said. “You can see that the nest is safe. There is a ladder behind the nest, maybe he jumped from there.”
Zafarullah, an officer of the 1122 rescue organization in Bahawalpur, who goes by one name, said the victim’s legs had been badly bitten and his body looked “a few hours old.”
“It is still unknown who he is and how he got there. It is being investigated,” said Zafarullah.
Forensic experts are examining the body to determine the exact cause of death.

A preliminary post-mortem report carried out at the Victoria Bahawal Hospital revealed the victim had been mauled by the big cat, Pakistani news channel Geo.tv reported. It also stated that the man tried to defend himself but was overpowered by the animal.
The zoo is run by the Punjab wildlife department and houses, among other animals, lions, tigers and hyenas in “modern moated enclosures,” according to its website. The entrance fee for adults at the zoo is only 18 cents.
The local government in Bahawalpur has formed a committee to investigate the deadly animal attack and submit a detailed report within a week, according to Geo.tv.
The zoo has been closed to visitors pending the outcome of the investigation.
