Maren Morris revealed her plans to leave country music after releasing three studio albums, “Hero,” “Girl,” and “Humble Quest” between 2016 and 2022. According to Los Angeles Times, he revealed his plans in the lyrics of his new song from the “Bridge” EP released on Friday. In his words, the singer wants to “burn it to the ground and start” his music career.
However, Morris already believed that the genre burned out on its own. He called out discrimination and homophobia in the genre from his early days in the music industry.
However, he is now overwhelmed by how much negativity there is in the industry and has tried to avoid it.
Morris even admitted to benefiting from an “unjust and dominant system” during his career as a country artist. The “I Could Use A Love Song” singer is fed up with the whole thing and has chosen to stay “very far away from it.” The artist released his EP tracks “The Tree” and “Get The Hell Out Of Here” under Columbia Records instead of the usual Columbia Nashville.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Morris talks more about his plans for his music career. He recalls waking up from the “white privilege” he experienced to criticize “misogyny,” “racism” and “homophobia” in the genre. Morris explained his reaction to country music, “if you really like this kind of music and you start to see problems coming up, it needs to be criticized.”
The singer called on people to examine the genre as a whole and see for themselves what he was talking about. Morris said, “Anything this popular should be scrutinized,” adding, “But I’ve said all I can say.”
The star, known for supporting minority groups such as the LGBTQ community, called out certain country music artists who have made transphobic and racist comments in their music in the past.
For example, he wonders about the conservative meaning behind Jason Aldean’s hit single, “Try That In A Small Town.” Morris says, “I’ve always been a questioner and challenger of the status quo just by being a woman. So it’s not even an option. The further you get into the country music business, you start to see the cracks. And once you see it, you can’t undo it.”

Morris discusses using symbolism in his music to speak up for the oppressed. She identifies herself as an ally for the LGBTQ community and explains that music is meant to be a voice for the voiceless.
An example of his activism is seen in his music video for “The Tree”, which criticizes Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” message. The footage shows Morris leaving a town and walking past several street signs with “Go Woke Go Broke” and “Don’t Tread On Me” written on them.
The star also stated that some homophobic and racist songs were made to give a voice to the oppressor rather than the oppressed. However, he was disappointed by this. Morris said, “That’s not what music is about. Music should be the voice of the downtrodden, the downtrodden. And now it’s being used as this toxic weapon in the culture war.”
