Soon after completing her graduation, Maria started working as a store manager and began to learn makeup side by side. Later, she worked in many cooperate offices as a HR advisor after attaining her master’s degree. In 2017, she worked as a Couture Brands Coordinator with L’Oréal. In November 2020, Maria Thattil won the title of ‘Miss Universe Australia 2020.’

Despite facing all the criticism about not being suited to represent Australia, Maria was proudly placed in the top 10 at Miss Universe 2020 contest. In an interview, she said,
Even though I was born and raised in Australia, there was a problem with the color of my skin and I was told very often, she doesn’t look Australian enough to represent the country. People were saying, ‘We should be sending white, blond women to Miss Universe’. It tells you about deeper problems, but we are making progress.”
In March 2022, Maria started to work as a columnist with Stellar Magazine. She appeared as a guest host in the American talk show ‘The Project’ in April 2023. Maria tried her hand at acting in the web series ‘Let’s Get Ducking Famous’ (2023) and played ‘Naomi.’
