Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead – who happens to be married to real-life Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor – just landed a starring role in a galaxy far, far away.
The “Fargo” actress is currently responsible for bringing to life the character of Hera Sydnulla from the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels” in the Disney+ live-action series, “Ahsoka.”
However, Winstead revealed that she was actually quite relieved that she had so much information to draw on to help tell her beloved character.

In an interview on Entertainment Weekly’s Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Winstead said that she had “never” had the experience of playing a character with such a rich background to draw from any of her previous roles.
“Having a character that already exists and has such a rich history on something like Rebels, as an actor, it’s incredible,” Winstead said. “Because sometimes we’re tasked with creating our own backgrounds or trying to flesh out characters that aren’t on the page that much. So to play a character that has season after season of a complex storyline and history with all the people in their lives and their relationships and experiences is something I’ve never experienced like that.”
He revealed that he didn’t just take advantage of watching “Rebels” to inform his performance. He also had “Rebels” and “Ahsoka” creator Dave Filoni there “to talk to him every day on set.” He described his presence and the amount of material to inform his portrayal of the character as “a real luxury, for sure.”

However, it’s possible that Hera has changed quite a bit since fans last caught up with her in the “Rebels” series finale. Winstead called Hera “a very strong but complicated person,” adding, “She’s very motherly, but she’s also the leader of this crew. And as we’ve seen, she goes on and becomes a general. So she leads a lot of people and she becomes a a legend in himself.”
While Hera may be known for her leadership and military expertise, Winstead reminds fans that Hera is “also very gentle and friendly,” as characters often “come to her for advice and solace and comfort.” Winstead went on to say, “Seeing those things come together is really incredible, and something that I really want to play on screen, because that’s an aspirational thing, I think, as a woman – or just a person – to can be all of those things in one.”
“He’s certainly not perfect, but he has all the qualities that make him someone you can look up to in a certain way,” he added. “And I like to try to be like that in the movies. I don’t know that I quite live up to it in reality, but it’s somebody to try and try and achieve it.”
Natasha Liu Bordizzo Reveals She Had Lightsaber Training For Her Role As Sabine Wren

Mary Elizabeth Winstead isn’t the only actress helping characters make their live-action debuts. Australian actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo plays another “Rebel” character – Sabine Wren. Collider reviewed her interview with Empire Magazine for their “Star Wars” 2023 summer issue, where Bordizzo revealed that Sabine’s Mandalorian heritage influenced her real-life lightsaber training for the role.
“I’m very happy to be out there. It’s hard to talk about my fight training without talking about the fact that it’s sword training, which is really all I’ve been doing,” he explained. “The Mandalorians [physicality] is very Western, and then ‘sword styles are heavily influenced by the samurai. Trying to embody those two things – sometimes one after the other – in choreography is very interesting because it’s a different way. I’m really enjoying the journey of trying to master both.”

The two actors will join Rosario Dawson, who helped animated character Ahsoka Tano make her live-action debut in “The Mandalorian” before she reprized the role again for a brief appearance in “The Book of Boba Fett.”
“Ahsoka” will be available to stream on Disney+ starting in August 2023.
