Massive industrial fire shuts down LA freeway, Gov. Newsom declares state of emergency

Gavin Newsom California Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Saturday after a large fire broke out in a reserve, closing one of the busiest freeways in downtown Los Angeles.

The fire was first reported in the early morning around 12:30 a.m. in a pallet yard under the I-10 Freeway near East 14th and Alameda streets, officials said.

It eventually spread to eight acres before being extinguished.

Shocking video footage from KABC shows huge flames shooting into the sky, consuming a freeway overpass.

The inferno caused homeless people living below the street to scramble and destroy an LAFD fire engine and several civilian vehicles, according to the outlet.

No injuries were reported, according to the LAFD.

“The state is mobilizing resources and taking steps to ensure any necessary repairs are completed as quickly as possible to minimize the impact to those traveling in and around Los Angeles,” Newsom said in a statement.

“The state will assess the damage, remove hazardous waste and begin repairs as soon as the site is accessible,” he added. “Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol will continue to provide updates as they become available.”

The first storage area to burn was a 40,000-square-foot property, according to the LAFD. The fire then spread to an adjacent storage area of similar size between Lawrence and Elwood streets.

By 2:30 a.m., pallets in both areas were mostly ablaze, and firefighters were using bulldozers to move debris and extinguish hot spots, according to local stations.

“Firefighters have successfully defended three exposed commercial buildings from the fire,” the LAFD said in a statement

Caltrans said the highway will be closed for at least 24 hours as they assess the extent of the damage.

“If it’s just what we call spalled concrete — peeling off — there might be an opportunity to go in and do some cosmetic repairs,” Caltrans spokeswoman Lauren Wonder told KABC. “If it comes down to the rebar and there is some concern about the structural integrity of the bridge, we need to make sure any traffic load is off the structure and then that will be a more extensive repair.”
