“Jeopardy!” champion Mattea Roach opens up about her father’s death for the first and last time.
Her father, Philip Henry Roach, was just 57 when he died of a brain aneurysm at his home in Halifax on May 2, 2023.
On Tuesday, May 23, Mattea took to Twitter to make a public statement about her father’s passing and explained that he was actually on the set of “Jeopardy! Masters” when his father died.

On Tuesday, May 23, Mattea Roach went to Twitter to share a picture of him and his late father. “In one of my contestant anecdotes on Jeopardy Masters tonight, I talked about my dad,” he explained, referring to the second day of the semifinals on “Jeopardy! Masters Tournament”.
“I’ve done this many times on the show before, but this time I’m speaking in the past tense because my father passed away earlier this month,” he continued. “I want to acknowledge my father in the context of tonight’s game first because he was the subject of the first contestant anecdote I ever told on Jeopardy. My thinking is that if I only get 30 seconds of talking time on the show, I want it to be about him.

“I also want to talk about my father because he died while the Master was in production. The first seven episodes were filmed before he died, the last three episodes were filmed after. (He got to see episode four in the studio so he knew it was going well for me),” he explained. “I’m going to say this on TV tonight but I want to say it again here – I was on the set of Jeopardy when my dad died. Short of being at home with my family, I can’t imagine a better place to be when receiving such horrible news.”

“Beyond this topic and my speech on tonight’s Masters episode, I have no further general comments to offer about my father at this time. I would ask people to respect my privacy and my family’s privacy because our grief is still fresh,” he continued, rolling up a picture of his father.

According to his obituary, Phillip is remembered for his “warmth and kindness that he showed in equal measure to those he had known for decades and those he had just met.”
“Phil’s four children were the greatest joy in his life,” the tribute read. “And he endeavored to impart all his wisdom and zeal to live up to them, through long lectures on local history, the pursuit of Trivial Pursuit, and instruction in music and films from before their time. His efforts were mostly successful.”
“Phil can be trusted to be equally proud of all his children, regardless of the scale or scope of their achievements,” the statement continued. “He was the proudest dad and made that clear to anyone who would listen.”

Many fans took to social media to express their condolences on his loss and wish him the best of luck in the “Jeopardy! Masters Tournament”, which is scheduled to end this week.
