Matthew Perry Releases “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” on November 1st, and before it drops he shares a few things that are also a bit of a warning to the faint hearted. He admits that it took him a long time to write the book because he was not very secure.

“I want to share when I’m safe from going to the dark side of everything again,” she shared with PEOPLE magazine

“I had to wait until I was safe enough – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction – to write it all down. And the main thing is, I’m pretty sure that it will help people.”

The Friends actor revealed that at the age of 49, he almost died. At the time, he shared with the public that he suffered a gastrointestinal perforation and spent several weeks in a very rough recovery. The actor’s colon ruptured due to opioid abuse.

He was in a coma for two weeks and a total of five months in the hospital. As a result, she had to use a colostomy bag for almost a year.

“The doctor told my family that I had a 2 percent chance of living,” the actor recalled. “I was put on something called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and lungs. And that’s called Hail Mary. No one survived that.”

Perry, too, shared that her addiction has always been present in her adult life, noting that even on the set of Friends at the age of 24, she drank more than the average person. “I can handle it, I guess. But by the time I was 34, I was really stuck in a lot of trouble.”

He was not always involved in addiction. “But there were a couple of years when I realized it. Season 9 was the year I realized it all the way through. And guess which season I was nominated for best actor? I was like, ‘That should tell me something.'”

The actor admitted that at one point, he was surprisingly taking 55 Vicodin a day. “I didn’t know how to stop,” he said, pointing out that at the time he was 128 pounds. He was so deep in addiction that he admitted he would run from the police if he had to.

“If the police came to my house and said, ‘If you drink tonight, we’ll take you to jail,’ I’d start packing. I can’t stop because the disease and addiction is progressive. So it gets worse and worse as you get older.”

For the most part, Perry would hide her addiction and problems but her cast members Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox, and Matt LeBlanc, who are like family at this point can see the change.

He said they “understand, and they’re patient,” and walk around “like penguins” to avoid the elephant in the room. He has been to rehab 15 times and now he is happy that something is finally working out for him.
