Last year, “Friends” star Matthew Perry faced severe backlash following the release of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and Big Awful Things. The book primarily revolves around Perry’s struggle with opioid addiction and his road to recovery, which almost took his life after his intestines ruptured from an overdose at the age of 49.

Unfortunately, Perry’s memoir also contains some controversial comments about “The Matrix” star Keanu Reeves. In a book excerpt published by The Sunday TimesPerry took Reeves to task, stating, “Why are original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger dead, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?”

The backlash surprised Reeves, with a source close to the actor claiming that he thought it was “out of left field.”

In his recent talk at the Los Angeles Times Book Festival, Perry once again expressed his regrets. The 53-year-old apologized for the innuendo and announced that he had dropped Reeves’ name from the upcoming edition of his memoir.

Perry admitted that referring to the “John Wick” star as such was a mistake and admitted he drew the comment because he lives near Reeves. He explained, per Insider, “I said stupid things. It is a bad thing to do. I drew his name because I live on the same street. I have publicly apologized to him. Any future version of the book will not have his name in it.” The “Friends” alum also expressed her desire to apologize to Reeves in person, stating, “If I run into that guy, I’m going to apologize. It’s just stupid.”

In his talk, Perry also shared that he tried to avoid criticizing anyone when writing his autobiography. The actor emphasized that the book’s purpose is not to call out or target anyone, stating, “That’s not the point.”

He explained that he doesn’t want to blame anyone in particular for the struggles he discusses in the book, including his battle with opioid addiction. Perry said, “I’ve been in therapy since I was 18 years old. I want to make sure that this is not the kind of book where I blame people for their mistakes. You have to give them credit for the things they do right.”

The “Whole Nine Yards” actor also said he wants to be remembered “as a man who lived life, loved well, lived well, and helped people. What I came across was a good thing and not a bad thing.”

During the interview with New York Times in 2022, the “Fools Rush In” actor opened up about his longtime struggle with substance abuse. He revealed that his addiction began in his teenage years with alcohol before progressing to more complex substances such as Vicodin, OxyContin, and Xanax.

To feed his addiction, Perry admitted to seeing eight doctors at once to get multiple prescriptions for the same drug. The actor also shared that he “probably spent $9 million or something trying to get sober.”

However, his decades of substance abuse came to a head in 2018 when he was hospitalized with pneumonia, a burst colon and other serious health issues. After spending two weeks in a coma and nine months with a colostomy bag, he underwent more than a dozen abdominal surgeries.

Perry wrote her memoir as part of her recovery and said the emotions “poured out of me — the painful stuff, the hospital, the rehab, all these things — it poured out of me. It went fast.”
