Matthew Perry’s close friends believe he died of a drug overdose, revealing that the actor struggled with sobriety, and would always feel embarrassed when he fell from a car.

“He has struggled with sobriety for years,” a source shared with the news outlet. “Every time he falls off the car, there’s a huge sense of shame.”
They continued, “After Friends ended, there was a lot of depression and frustration in her career. She struggled with her mental health but never got help for it. The way she dealt with it was to isolate herself. Since the show, she’s been taken care of financially and doesn’t need work, so it creates an environment to use.”
Perry has been very open about her struggles with substance abuse and documented her battle in her memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which was released in 2022.
The actress stated in the book how it affected her health, leading to multiple surgeries and all her attempts to get better. In the memoir, Perry talks about his use of the drug Ketamine, writing that it “had my name written on it — they might as well have called him ‘Matty.'”

In the autopsy report obtained by Explosion, Perry’s official cause of death was revealed as “acute effects of Ketamine.” The autopsy also reported drowning, coronary artery disease, and side effects from buprenorphine as contributing factors but not the direct cause of death.
Perry said in his memoirs that he would “continue to sign up for this S— [ketamine treatments]” because “it’s something different, and anything different is good,” even though he felt like he “died” during the procedure.
“Taking K was like getting hit over the head with a giant happy shovel. But drunkenness is rough and beyond spades,” he wrote.
In his memoirs, the actor spoke of attending rehab 15 times throughout his life and claimed to have been sober for 18 months when the book was published.

The actor’s last known romantic relationship was with Molly Hurwitz, a talent agent. The couple’s romance led to an engagement that ended after six months in June 2021.

“But, I obviously know that man in a very different way, too. Even though I love him more deeply than I can understand, he’s complicated, and he causes pain like I’ve never known. No one in my adult life has had such an impact. deeper to me than Matthew Langford Perry. I’m so grateful for that, for everything I learned from our relationship,” added the talent agent.
Hurwitz concluded her tribute by stating that she was “relieved” to know that Perry is now “at peace.”
