Matthew Perry’s rehab buddy said he wasn’t able to deal with ‘tough love’

Matthew Perry surrounded himself with “enablers” during his decades-long battle with addiction, according to sources, while a doctor warned ketamine abuse in Los Angeles was “out of control”.

“Friends” star Perry, 54, had a hard time attending an Alcoholics Anonymous group in New York because he couldn’t stand being challenged by others in the program who called him out, the actor’s former recovery friend said.

“Mr. Perry couldn’t handle the tough love that characterized my AA group,” the source told The Post. “I feel for him, but in my 25 years of experience, sometimes ‘helping’ someone is really enabling .

“I think he has a lot of well-meaning enablers. He’s in a golden cage.”

The friend said he didn’t want to elaborate further out of respect for the privacy of the recovery group, but added Perry was a pretty “typical addict,” in his opinion.

Perry claimed he was clean and sober for 19 months before his death on October 28 when he was found face down and unconscious in a pool at his home in Pacific Palisades, California.

His death was caused by “acute effects of ketamine” and accidental drowning, according to an autopsy report released late last week.

Pathologist Dr. Michael Baden explained to The Post Perry “basically died of a ketamine overdose and had about three times the normal. [dosage] amount in his system.”

In her autobiography, Perry is candid about her 30-year struggle to stay sober.

The “Fools Rush In” actor says he’s attended 6,000 AA meetings, attended rehab at least 15 times, detoxed 65 times and spent half his life and about $9 million of his estimated $120 million fortune going in and out of treatment or assisted living calm.

The David Mahjoubi Ketamine Treatment Clinic in Los Angeles, was one of the first ketamine-only treatment centers in the country.

The beloved actor was known to have ketamine infusions to treat depression and drug addiction, but the medical examiner said he had not had it for more than a week before the drowning, meaning it could not have caused his death.

Dr. David Mahjoubi, an anesthesiologist who founded the Ketamine Healing Clinic in Los Angeles, told The Post that laws regarding the use and distribution of the drug were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic because people could not go to doctor’s offices.

He said more and more online drug makers are taking prescriptions from doctors who don’t do a proper assessment of the patient’s mental health before prescribing ketamine.

“It’s like the Wild West right now in terms of ketamine abuse and unfortunately, the medical boards of various states don’t care about this,” Mahjoubi said.

He also noted the rise of “concierge medicine” services in Los Angeles, where in-home treatment is provided to patients, but Mahjoubi claims services are often provided without providing a complete and proper physical and psychological assessment.

“There are some companies that send medical personnel to meet the law, but these people may not have seen the patient directly or via telehealth first, and that is dangerous,” he said.

Mahjoubi said people are paying thousands of dollars to receive private ketamine treatment at home, in addition to getting it in a more controlled environment.

“I have caught some patients who have used various services and I have released them from receiving further treatment from my practice as soon as I found out,” Mahjoubi told The Post.

“Meanwhile, you also have companies popping up online that can easily send someone ketamine tablets. It was out of control.”

While it remains unclear how Perry obtained the ketamine found in his system, the autopsy report also revealed the actor had regular testosterone injections just two weeks before his death.

A friend interviewed by investigators said the testosterone injections sometimes made him “angry and mean,” but he was generally happy and seemed “in good spirits,” according to the 29-page autopsy report.

Perry also had Buprenorphine in his system, a drug also used to treat drug addiction, the report states.

Deputies who responded to Perry’s $6 million Pacific Palisades cottage found “multiple open, empty, half-filled medicine bottles designated for [Perry]as well as over-the-counter medications, vitamins, digestive aids and dishes filled with various loose pills, tablets, caplets, candies and breath mints,” according to the report.

The star was seen playing pickleball — which he said was key to staying sober — just hours before his death.

In her last Instagram post, the beloved actress was seen enjoying a quiet night relaxing in her hot tub days before she overdosed and drowned in the same pool.

“Oh, so the swirling warm water makes you feel good? I’m Mattman,” the actor wrote in his last caption.
