Maus Art Spiegelman’s Early Life and Career
He moved to the United States with his parents in 1951. His family initially settled in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Queens, New York. He is driven by the clever artwork and provocative humor of Mad Magazine.
This is why Art Spiegelman studied cartoons. At Russell Sage Junior High School, he was an honors student and developed the Blasé fanzine inspired by Mad. He earned money from his paintings until he reached high school and he sold artwork to the original Long Island Press and many other outlets.
In his teens, he began attending the Manhattan High School of Art and Design. He met Woody Gelman (art director of Topps Chewing Gum Company). Woody encouraged him to apply to Topps after graduating from high school. When he was 15, he got paid for his work from the Rego Park Newspaper.
When he graduated in 1965, his parents insisted he pursue financial security in a career such as dentistry. Since he was interested in art, this is why he enrolled at Harpur College to study art and philosophy.
While he was in college, he began freelancing at Topps, which provided him with income for the next 2 decades. He also worked as a staff cartoonist for the college newspaper and also edited the college’s humor magazine.
When he turned 18, he was doing summer training. At that time, Topps hired Art Spiegelman for Gelman’s Product Development Department as a creative consultant, where he created trading cards and other related products including the Wacky Package parodic trading card series.
He began selling self-published underground comics on street corners in 1966. Interestingly, Art Spiegelman had cartoons published in underground publications including The East Village Other. He then went to San Francisco for a few months in 1967.
In the late winter of 1968, he suffered a brief but profound nervous breakdown that caused him to drop out of university studies for a short time. He told that at that time he was under LSD with high frequency.
Spiegelman was committed to Binghamton State Mental Hospital for a month and shortly after he left, his mother committed suicide over the death of her only surviving brother.
He left college without a degree. In the early 1970s, he contributed to the success of underground comics. Art Spiegelman published two strips in 1972 that represented a break from his past work.
Maus (the first) is a 3-page story that appeared in cartoonist Justin Green’s Funny Animals anthology. Prisoners on Planet Hell (the second) is a challenge to understand his mother’s suicide through panels that evoke the bold intensity of German Expressionist woodcuts. In fact, this strip was collected in Breakdowns in 1977 with other works.
In 1980, Art Spiegelman founded Raw (an underground comics and graphic anthology) with his wife (Francoise Mouly). The strip featured raw by European artists and also saw the work of Art Spiegelman himself. Raw was known as the leading avant-garde fusion journal of its time.
Art Spiegelman portrays himself as the grown-up Artie Spiegelman, who tries to understand and reconstruct his parents’ past while dealing with the legacy of his mother’s death, his own guilt, and his aging, and often difficult, father.
The quality of Maus and Raw fiction pushed Comix into the mainstream. After their success, Art Spiegelman began working as an illustrator at the New York Times, Playboy cartoonist, writer, and staff artist for The New Yorker.
His other notable works include Breakdowns, Maus, and Garbage Pail Kids.
