Actress Mayim Bialik wasn’t too happy about a “Saturday Night Live” parody that mocked her nose with a fake prosthetic.
“The Big Bang Theory” recalled feeling “embarrassed” by the 1994 sketch and explained why he recently decided to talk about the incident decades later.

“Jeopardy!” fans may not remember that long before she stood behind the hosting podium, she was a child star on the sitcom “Blossom.” The sitcom was parodied during a 1994 “Saturday Night Live” sketch featuring Melanie Hutsell playing Mayim’s main character, Blossom. Mike Myers and Sara Gilbert also participated in the sketch, but Melanie was the only one wearing prosthetics.
“The actor who portrays me dances and mugs for the camera and he’s funny,” Mayim recently told Variety. “But. He wears a fake nose. To really convey that she’s ‘Blossom,’ she wears a big fake nose.”

“I don’t know if it’s bigger than my real nose and I don’t care to remember it. I remember that it struck me as odd. And it confuses me. No one else on the show was parodied because of their characteristics,” he continued. “In MAD magazine, everyone is caricatured, but in this parody, only I was chosen. More specifically, it’s my nose.”
When asked why he didn’t talk about the controversial sketch until now, Mayim replied, “I never thought to talk about it and mostly I tried to forget it. I hope no one notices. All my friends in high school watched SNL. It’s not subtle. They will all see it and I feel embarrassed.”
Bradley Cooper’s Prosthetic Nose Also Faces Backlash

There has been a lot of talk about the use of prosthetics surrounding Bradly Cooper’s prosthetic nose in the Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro.” During the 2023 Venice Film Festival, Oscar-winning makeup artist Kazu Hiro told Deadline that he regretted the backlash the fake nose caused.
“I didn’t expect that to happen,” Kazu Hiro said at the festival last month, according to Deadline. “I feel sorry that I hurt some people’s feelings.”
“I wanted to portray Lenny as real as possible,” he added. “She is photogenic and a great person. We want to respect and love that look. We did several different tests. That was us [only] intention.”
Despite the backlash online, Bernstein’s children — Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein — defended the decision and said they worked closely with Cooper on the film.
“We are deeply touched to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the open-hearted joy he brings to his explorations,” read a statement posted on their Instagram page.
“It is our heart to see any misrepresentation or misunderstanding of his efforts. It’s true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose,” they added. “Bradley chose to use makeup to enhance his likeness, and we’re fine with that. We’re also sure that our dad would be fine with it.”

Although Bernstein’s children approved of the use of prosthetics and even mentioned “that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose” in their statement, the “Call Me Kat” star still isn’t sure how he feels.
“Cut to 40 years later and I’m starting to hear people talking about ‘Jewface’ and, more recently, about Leonard Bernstein’s Bradley Cooper nose,” Mayim said. “And I started going through pictures of Bradley and Leonard and wondered if it was necessary. I don’t know what I feel. I don’t know if it matters how I feel. I think it’s important how his family feels. But maybe not?”

“Girls all over the world used to tell me that they had never seen a Jewish girl like me on TV before they saw me on Blossom,” she continued. “Many said they knew I was Jewish and it made them proud. That really touched my heart, and still… I wonder how the girls felt when they saw an actor playing me with a funny fake nose. I wonder if that’s different with Bradley Cooper playing a famous person. Is it important?”
“I’ve had a lot of conversations with myself about my nose over the past 40 years. I didn’t always like it, but I never wanted to change it either,” he added. “My nose is undeniably Jewish, and so am I. Is it because of my nose? perhaps. But I don’t need to know because we will always be one and the same.”
Fortunately for the show “Blossom,” the 47-year-old actress recently opened up about plans for a “Blossom reboot.
